The Canadian National Railway/VIA Rail Station in Sioux Lookout is designated a federal heritage railway station for its historical, architectural, and environmental significance. The designation dates from March 10, 1994. The building was constructed in 1911 as a one-and-a-half-storey stucco building; a VIA Rail waiting room is still located in the station. VIA Rail stops in Sioux Lookout several times a week. Check the current schedule before departure.
Events Throughout the Year
The Sioux Lookout Blueberry Festival takes place every August and lasts ten days. During the event, it includes more than 100 events; the number may vary from one edition to another. Walleye Weekend takes place every year on the second weekend of June. It is a catch-and-keep fishing tournament on Minnitaki, Abram, Pelican, and Botsford Lakes in the wider regional area. The specific program may also vary. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the latest information for the relevant edition. The term catch-and-keep means that caught fish are kept rather than released.
Market and Trails
The Northwest Farmers Market offers locally grown fruit and vegetables, handcrafted items, and homemade baked goods. Market dates and vendors may vary; this selection complements the event and nature themes with food and handcrafted goods.
The Umfreville Trail begins at the Sioux Lookout Information Centre and ends at the Umfreville Park Historic Site. The route is 8 km long and follows a paved, 1.83 m-wide path. It is accessible to walkers, joggers, cyclists, inline skaters, and wheelchair users; the terrain is easy. Skiers use the trail during the winter months. Check route details before your visit.
Recreation and Landscape
The Cedar Bay Recreation Complex has several trails and offers riding lessons. Horse-drawn wagon or sleigh rides are offered there during local community events. These rides are tied to such events, while the trails and riding lessons provide other recreational opportunities at the complex.
The Municipality of Sioux Lookout is surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Canadian Shield, extensive forests, and a vast network of lakes and rivers. This landscape shapes the wider view of the municipality; the trails and activities described offer practical ways to enjoy a trip that includes outdoor recreation as well as events.
