Oakville offers several distinct ways to explore: history in historic homes, contemporary art, gardens and outdoor trails. When planning, it is worth considering both how you want to visit and the time of year. While Oakville Museum offers guided tours, visits to Sovereign House are self-guided in summer; the gardens add another seasonal highlight with their blooming period.

History and Contemporary Art

Oakville Museum offers guided tours of the Chisholm family home. Tour availability may change; check whether a tour is being offered before your visit.

The permanent exhibition “Freedom, Opportunity and Family: Oakville’s Black History” is located at Erchless Estate in Oakville. It adds a dedicated focus on Oakville’s Black history to the area’s historic attractions.

Oakville Galleries is a not-for-profit contemporary art museum. Its exhibition spaces are located at Centennial Square, 120 Navy Street, and at Gairloch Gallery, 1306 Lakeshore Road East. If you want to include contemporary art in your plans, these two addresses offer specific places to visit. Gallery locations may change, so check the addresses before your visit.

In summer, volunteers welcome visitors to historic Sovereign House. You can take a self-guided tour of the restored rooms, where artifacts, photographs, archival documents and memorabilia are on display. Unlike the tours at Oakville Museum, you set your own route here. Seasonal opening details may change; check them before your visit.

Gardens and Outdoor Trails

Gairloch Gardens comprises a park and a gallery on a former estate. Its gardens include extensive rose gardens; 15,000 annuals also bloom there between June and September. This offers garden enthusiasts a specific seasonal reference point. Art is also part of Gairloch Gardens: “Wind Bower” is an interactive and immersive artwork. Check the artwork’s location before your visit.

Oakville’s Heritage Trails are open to walkers, joggers and cyclists; individual sections may be temporarily closed. Information stations tell more than 80 stories about the land and its people, dating back to 9000 BC. The trails combine physical activity with a historical perspective, offering things to discover along the way as well as a place to get outdoors.

One trail begins at Bronte’s Harbour and runs north along the creek through Petro Canada Park. It then follows the west side of Bronte Road to Bronte Provincial Park and Upper Middle Road West. These named points give you a sense of the route without assuming a walking time or distance.

At Oakville’s harbours, staff offer boat haul-out services as well as mast stepping and unstepping. The availability of these services may change; check in advance if needed. Oakville’s attractions therefore range from historic sites and art to trails, gardens and practical harbour services.
