Deep River is set amid natural surroundings on the banks of the Ottawa River. The Deep River Walking Tour offers a defined route through town: the 4 km loop is in the town centre, starts at Lamure Beach and then passes through a cedar forest. Along the riverbank, it continues to Centennial Rock and Deep River Marina; from there, the loop returns to Lamure Beach. Trail conditions may change.
Walking Tour, Beaches and Waterways
The walking tour links several local landmarks, while its 4 km length keeps it clearly defined. Deep River Marina offers another perspective: it is on the Ottawa River and provides access to nearly 500 km of navigable waterways. This brings together a route on foot and a reference point for the waterways, without suggesting that the loop itself is a boat tour.
Deep River also has beautiful beaches and multi-use trails. These add to the options for spending time outdoors, while the Walking Tour—with its route along the riverbank, through the cedar forest and back to Lamure Beach—offers a specifically described trail.
Cross-Country Skiing and Downhill Skiing in Winter
For cross-country skiing, the Deep River Cross Country Ski Club maintains 20 km of groomed trails within the town. The club offers a Jack Rabbit program for children, a racing program for youth and lessons for adults. Equipment rentals, tours, a heated cabin and a wilderness cabin are also available. Participants can also enter the Silver Spoon Ski Fest and club championships. Programs and trail conditions are seasonal; check with the club before making plans.
Near Deep River, the Silver Spoon Cross Country Ski Trails are located east of town on both sides of Balmer Bay Road, beyond the hospital. The trail network covers 30 km, of which 20 km are groomed and track-set. Access may depend on membership, and trail conditions may vary. Check these details before planning to use the trails.
Downhill skiing is offered by the Mount Martin Ski Club within the town: it maintains 12 runs, including a tree run and two terrain parks, and is served by a T-bar lift. A heated cabin with a snack bar offers a place to warm up and relax while skiing during the day or at night. Terrain and lift operations are seasonal; check with the ski club for the current season. Cross-country and downhill skiing differ here not only in the activity but also in the facilities and trails described for each.
More Activities and Excursions
In summer, the Deep River Shoreline Sports Club offers a junior sailing school and junior court programs. Other offerings include pickleball, tennis, sailing and rowing. The club was formerly known as the Deep River Yacht & Tennis Club. Offerings and participation requirements may change; check current options directly with the club.
Mount Martin in Québec lies on the opposite side of Deep River. A 5 km hiking trail leads over the mountain; getting there requires crossing from Deep River. This makes it a different option from the loop in the town centre and an excursion to the opposite side to consider when planning.
Culture and golf also add to the activities in town. The Deep River Players stage performances two to three times a year and hold public workshops. For the current schedule, check directly with the troupe. The Deep River Golf Club is on Highway 17 at the entrance to town and is a nine-hole course designed by Stanley Thompson. Playing opportunities may change; check access with the golf club before your visit.
