Visitors to Cochrane can choose from very different experiences: polar bears at the Polar Bear Habitat, winter activities in the snow, and museums dedicated to Tim Horton and Cochrane’s snowmobile history. To plan your trip, first decide what kind of experience you want: a self-guided visit, outdoor activity on winter trails, or culture and events. The options differ not only in subject, but also in whether you want to focus on a visit, an activity or a specific event.

Polar Bears at the Polar Bear Habitat

The Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat is the world’s largest and only facility dedicated exclusively to the care of polar bears. Visitors can take a self-guided tour and watch polar bears in spacious enclosures; general admission can be purchased on arrival at the Welcome Centre. This makes it a clearly defined visit with an independent, self-guided tour. If the Habitat is an essential part of your trip, check its seasonal hours of operation in advance.

Winter Trails and Activities

Those who choose Cochrane as a winter destination will find different ways to enjoy the outdoors. The town has a network of 650 kilometres of well-maintained, safe and adventurous snowmobile trails. The Cochrane Cross Country Ski Club also offers opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on the trails throughout the winter. These activities are open to skiers and snowshoers of all ages, as well as tourists. The first thing to consider when choosing is the activity: snowmobile trails on the one hand, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing on the other. The 650 kilometres refers to the snowmobile trail network.

The club also hosts monthly winter events for members and visitors. These include night skiing or night walks, and chili dinners. If you’d like to include one of these events in your trip, check the specific dates, as individual event schedules may change.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Tim Horton Museum displays Tim Horton memorabilia, including game-worn jerseys and family photographs. The Cochrane Classic Vintage Snowmobile Museum has a different historical focus: it traces Cochrane’s snowmobile history from the 1950s to the present day. Together, they offer two different perspectives: personal memorabilia related to Tim Horton and the history of snowmobiling in Cochrane.

The Tim Horton Events Centre adds an arena, a public swimming pool, a museum and a community centre to the mix. Its four components set the Centre apart from the two museums, which each have a specific theme. This gives you a choice between learning about personal memorabilia, snowmobile history, and a facility with several different functions.

The Cochrane Winter Carnival

The Cochrane Winter Carnival is Ontario’s oldest winter festival. During its torchlight parade, participants walk to Lake Commando, where a large bonfire is lit. While the club events include winter activities and gatherings, the Carnival centres on a parade and bonfire. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the event dates.
