Arichat offers a clear focus for travellers looking to combine architectural history and maritime themes. Churches and historic buildings tell the story of different architectural styles and former uses, while the harbour adds the Arichat Cup sailing competition. When searching for accommodation in Arichat, it helps to first consider whether you want to make architecture, blacksmithing and seafaring history, or the harbour the focus of your stay.

Architecture and Local History

Notre Dame de l’Assomption, which opened in 1837, is the oldest surviving Roman Catholic church in Nova Scotia. Its architecture combines Neoclassical and Gothic Revival styles. This combination makes the church a distinctive example of Arichat’s architectural history.

The Flynn-Cutler-Robichaud House combines Gothic and New England Colonial architectural styles. It operated as an inn under the name Commercial House; the hotel remained in operation until the late 1950s. Today, the building is a private residence. LeBrun’s Store was rebuilt as a new three-storey building and continues to shape Arichat’s harbour. Together, these buildings reveal different chapters of local history.

The St. John’s Centre for the Arts is located in the former St. John’s Anglican Church in Arichat; the building was constructed in 1895 and designed by William Critchlow Harris. In Richmond County, the Centre celebrates local talent and regularly hosts events. Tours can be arranged by email through the Friends of St. John’s Arichat Society.

The forge at the LeNoir Forge Museum was built between 1780 and 1800 and is one of the oldest stone buildings on Cape Breton Island. The museum site includes a boathouse with exhibits and information about maritime history. A working forge is also part of the experience; check current accessibility before visiting.

Harbour and Events

The Arichat Cup is a 16-mile harbour race for members of local yacht clubs. Spectators can watch the competition from either side of Arichat Harbour. If you want to make the Cup a set part of your itinerary, check the event date in advance. The harbour is both a historic landmark and a sporting venue.
