Merigomish combines a strong connection to the coast with specific reasons to stay: the area offers extensive opportunities for coastal kayaking, and the section of the Cape George Scenic Drive from Merigomish to Sutherlands River features viewpoints overlooking the Merigomish Harbour estuary. There is also a seasonal market and cheese from the Knoydart Creamery. This makes it possible to discover the area through its waters, landscape and local food without having to fit every experience into the same day’s itinerary.
Coast, Parkland and Scenic Drive
Merigomish’s coastal area offers extensive opportunities for kayaking. Nearby, Merigomish Harbour Provincial Park provides habitat for resting eagles and includes nutrient-rich estuarine mudflats. Wildlife can be more or less present depending on the season; the park thus offers a different landscape focus from kayaking. It covers approximately 20 hectares of Crown land in Pictou County. Its designation as a provincial park has been in effect since February 13, 2024.
Another perspective on the coastal landscape can be found along the section of the Cape George Scenic Drive from Merigomish to Sutherlands River. The route follows Route 245 and Route 4, is 8 kilometres long and takes about 10 minutes. Along the way, there are viewpoints overlooking the Merigomish Harbour estuary. As conditions at the viewpoints and roadside access can change, check them before setting out.
Market, Gathering and Cheese
The Merigomish Schoolhouse Farmers’ Market is a seasonal public market. It takes place on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. between May and November. As the seasonal schedule may change, check the hours before visiting. The Merigomish Schoolhouse hosts a weekly gathering featuring local food, art and music; dates and operating details may change.
The Knoydart Creamery in Merigomish processes milk into pasteurized whole milk, cream and cheddar. Knoydart Cheddar is available plain and aged, as well as in varieties including garlic, chili, caraway, smoked and chive. Dunmaglass, a Caerphilly cheese, and fresh cheese curds are also available. Product selection and availability may change.
