The Old Town Lunenburg Heritage Conservation District is located on a hilly peninsula between Lunenburg Harbour and Back Harbour. Waterfront and shipyard buildings are part of this historic townscape, as is the preserved rectangular street grid. This makes it possible to consider urban planning, architecture, and maritime history as distinct aspects of Lunenburg’s heritage.

Historic Lunenburg

Lunenburg was founded in 1753. Old Town Lunenburg has preserved its original rectangular street plan and planned British colonial layout. The Heritage Conservation District is valued for these origins, its well-preserved traditional architecture, and Lunenburg’s long-standing importance as a centre of maritime industries.

One striking building is the three-storey Lunenburg Academy: a Victorian wooden building in the Second Empire style, visible from many miles away. In 1983, the Academy was listed both as a Provincial Heritage Property and as a National Historic Site. Those interested in historic interiors will find another example at the Knaut-Rhuland House Museum: the Georgian building dates to around 1793, is a National Historic Site, and has a largely unchanged historic interior. The museum offers costumed tours as well as permanent and changing exhibitions.

Fishing and Boatbuilding on the Waterfront

The Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic uses former fish-processing buildings and a Big Boat Shed on the Lunenburg waterfront to showcase the heritage of fishing and boatbuilding. The First Fishers Exhibit offers a distinct perspective, presenting the beginnings of fishing in Nova Scotia from a Mi’kmaw viewpoint. The Bluenose Gallery houses the largest collection of artifacts from the original Bluenose. Together, these different areas of focus span perspectives from the Mi’kmaq to the history of a well-known ship.

Compare Tours and Activities

Lunenburg Walking Tours uses local guides to share the town’s history, folklore, and superstitions; dates vary by season. Trot in Time Buggy Rides offers a two-kilometre horse-drawn carriage tour through historic Lunenburg, with historical commentary and local legends. Operating dates are also seasonal. The two tours differ not only in their mode of transport, but also in whether you want to focus on guided storytelling or a ride through the historic town.

For longer distances, the 119-kilometre Rum Runners Trail connects Halifax and Lunenburg. It is suitable for walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing; check conditions and access before setting out. Expedition Nova Scotia offers a two-hour Zodiac tour through the Lunenburg and Mahone Bay archipelago, focusing on ecosystems, wildlife, and geology. Availability may vary by season. Bluenose II offers two-hour harbour cruises in Lunenburg and Halifax when they are included in the published schedule. Check the schedule if you are planning this trip.

Lunenburg County: Nature as a Regional Addition

The wider destination of Lunenburg County includes other distinct nature destinations. The Holden Lake Wilderness Area protects about 1,700 hectares of older mixed forest in the Gold River watershed, surrounding much of Holden Lake. The area includes 10 kilometres of shoreline along Holden Lake and about 4 kilometres along the Gold River. Rissers Beach Provincial Park offers camping and swimming at a sandy beach; interpretive panels and a boardwalk lead through a salt marsh. Indian Path Common adds 7 kilometres of natural footpaths in loops and a 350-acre restored Acadian forest area. These regional destinations offer a different focus from Lunenburg’s museums and historic architecture.
