Port Hood combines a variety of beach landscapes with a 17-kilometre section of the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail and the region’s history. Port Hood Beach is sandy and sheltered, while Port Hood Station has a pebble beach beside white sand. The Chestico Museum adds regional cultural history to a coastal stay. You can therefore shape your stay around the coast, outdoor activities and history.

Beaches and Coastal Views

Port Hood Beach is a sandy, well-sheltered beach with views of Port Hood Island and a rock breakwater. Port Hood Station is a popular picnic spot with a pebble beach; a white sand beach lies right beside it. For a day by the water, the two locations differ in their beach type and surroundings: Port Hood Beach combines sheltered sand with views of the island and breakwater, while Port Hood Station pairs a picnic spot with a pebble beach and a neighbouring white sand beach. This gives you different options for a coastal stay.

The Chestico Section of the Coastal Trail

The Chestico section of the Celtic Shores Coastal Trail is 17 kilometres long and runs through Port Hood. Along the coast, it offers views of Henry Island and Port Hood Island. The Celtic Shores Coastal Trail is a multi-use trail for cyclists, hikers, runners, ATV riders, skiers, snowmobilers and horseback riders. This lets you consider the local route and coastal views as two aspects of the same section. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out.

Cultural History and Guided Walks

On the outskirts of Port Hood, the Chestico Museum has been a community museum since 1986. It offers locals and visitors a unique cultural heritage experience focused on the history and heritage of the Port Hood region. The local subject matter therefore extends beyond the coast: the museum explores the region’s past, while the beach and trail bring the landscape to the fore.

The Chestico Museum’s 2026 program includes the Twilight Tales walking tours in Port Hood. John & Cathy Gillies lead the walks in historical costume; they cover people, events and landmarks from Port Hood’s past. Dates and schedules may change, so check the latest information before planning this activity.

Inverness County as the Wider Setting

In the wider destination of Inverness County, the west coast includes the Cabot Trail. The Celtic Shores Coastal Trail is 92 kilometres long within the county, runs from Port Hastings to the community of Inverness, and has more than 30 starting and access points. The difference in scale helps put things in perspective: the Chestico section through Port Hood is 17 kilometres long, while the regional figure covers the entire trail between Port Hastings and the community of Inverness. The Town of Inverness is also home to Inverness Beach, a 1.5-kilometre-long sandy beach with a boardwalk above the beach. The communities of Inverness County are also connected by musical traditions.
