A clear, spring-fed lake, two scenic hiking trails and boating give Folly Lake a distinct focus on nature and water. Nearby, the Folly River adds another option: the focus there is whitewater on the river, not boating on the lake. This distinction can help you plan your stay around your interests—with time at the lake, on the trails or on a separate river trip.
A Lake with a Distinct Character
Folly Lake lies in the Salmon/Debert Rivers watershed. The lake covers 78.9 hectares and is 33.5 metres deep. It is also notable for being clear and spring-fed. Its area and depth provide two different measurements of the lake, while the watershed also places it geographically.
Boating, Fishing and Hiking
Boating and fishing for perch, trout and Atlantic salmon are popular at Folly Lake. In Colchester, the lake is part of Recreational Fishing Area 6. If you plan to fish, check the current regulations and maps separately. The administrative designation provides a point of reference, but does not replace checking the fishing rules in effect.
Two scenic hiking trails add to the activities on the water. You can weigh whether you want to focus your stay more on boating and fishing or on a hike. Trail routes and availability may change; check the latest information before setting out.
The Folly River as a Separate Focus
The nearby Folly River is a Class III to V whitewater stream. The first whitewater access point is at a bridge just below Folly Lake. Grandfather Clock is the first major rapid on the Folly River below this access point. The lake and river offer different ways to spend time on the water: boating on the lake is distinct from a river trip with its own put-in. The Folly River’s navigability and hazards vary by season; check current conditions before planning a trip.
Trail Tradition and History
Wascally Wabbit is a trail tradition at Folly Lake dating back to 2012. The Wascally Wabbit course listed for 2026 follows groomed ATV trails and rocky singletrack, and also includes sections with puddles. This is a different trail experience from the two scenic hiking trails by the lake.
Folly Lake is also associated with historical events. In 1867, James B. Tupper and Charlotte Carter were married at Folly Lake in Colchester County. In 1878, 20,000 juvenile lake whitefish were released there. On historical ski outings, skiers got off the train at Folly Lake and then continued to the ski lodge. The story thus spans a local event, fisheries history and an earlier way of travelling to go skiing.
Plan Your Accommodation Search Around Your Trip
When looking for a vacation rental at Folly Lake, it helps to decide in advance what you want to do during your stay: are you mainly interested in boating, fishing, hiking or including the Folly River? Use that priority to guide your search. A river trip remains a separate planning consideration, distinct from activities on the lake.
