Five Islands combines striking coastal views with named trails, geology and cultural stories. At Five Islands Provincial Park, you can choose from scenic viewpoints, different routes and a geological experience. Five Islands Lighthouse Park offers another perspective on the islands and the Minas Basin. These different themes give your stay several points of focus without combining them into a single tour.
Trails and Geological Destinations
Five Islands Provincial Park is located at 618 Bentley Branch Road in Five Islands, Nova Scotia. Its Coastal Trail runs along 90 m-high cliffs and offers a scenic viewpoint. From there, you can see Old Wife, the Five Islands and the world’s highest tides. The park also includes the 3.8 km Economy Mountain Trail.
Another option is the “Junior Geologist: Ocean Floor Discovery” experience. At Five Islands Provincial Park, it follows a 4 km out-and-back route to the geological feature Old Wife. The distances for the Economy Mountain Trail and this experience are similar, but refer to different offerings: a named trail in one case, and an out-and-back route to a geological destination in the other. When choosing, consider not only the distance but also which destination interests you.
Two Perspectives on the Coast
Five Islands Lighthouse Park is a coastal park overlooking the Five Islands in the Bay of Fundy. Its panoramic view across the Minas Basin includes all Five Islands and Old Wife. By comparison, the viewpoint on the Coastal Trail is described in terms of the cliffs, islands and the world’s highest tides. The descriptions of the views therefore emphasize different things: the Minas Basin is expressly the focus at Lighthouse Park, while the view from the Coastal Trail is associated with the cliffs and tides.
Geology and Stories
The Five Islands, after which the community and provincial park are named, are among the iconic places in the Cliffs of Fundy Geopark. Five Islands Provincial Park is also home to the Triassic-Jurassic Fault geosite. This means you can explore not only the named trails and viewpoints, but also the islands’ place within the geopark and a specific geological site in the park.
A famous Kluskap story is set in Five Islands: Kluskap tries to drive away the giant beaver by throwing five large clumps of earth into the bay. Long Island, one of the Five Islands, offers another cultural and archaeological connection. It contains stone material from which ancestors made tools. The story and the reference to tool stone offer different ways to explore the place’s past.
On Tidal Waters
Canoeing and kayaking on coastal tidal waters are possible at Five Islands Provincial Park. Paddling adds a water-based perspective to the viewpoints and trails. When planning, you can choose your focus based on whether you’re interested in coastal views, a named route, geology, cultural stories or water activities.
