A small historic copper mine and the Old French Road connect French Road with mining and settlement history. For an overnight stay, there is also an adults-oriented vacation rental on the lakefront.

Mining and Old Roads

A small historic copper mine is located in French Road. The French Road deposit has been explored intermittently since the mid-20th century; according to current knowledge, it has potential for cobalt and bismuth.

French Road developed along the Old French Road. Built by the French in the 1730s, the road connected the port of Louisbourg with the Mira River and ended on the riverbank opposite present-day Salmon River and Two Rivers Wildlife Park. A 2022 article describes much of the Old French Road as a remote backcountry trail.

The settlement history along this road extends into the surrounding area as well: in the 19th century, Scottish families established homesteads in the Mira River valley, in the area around Oceanview, Gabarus, and French Road.
