Memramcook combines insights into the history and culture of the Acadian people with trails offering sweeping views across marshlands. When choosing a base for your trip, you can focus on either Acadian heritage or outdoor activities with scenic views.

Acadian Culture at Monument-Lefebvre

The Monument-Lefebvre National Historic Site is a community gathering place. There, you can learn about the history, culture, and achievements of the Acadian people. The site is considered a living symbol of the Acadian Renaissance; its visitor offerings also include an exhibition. The theater at the Monument-Lefebvre National Historic Site is known for its exceptional acoustics. In this named cultural venue, different aspects come together: Acadian history, an exhibition, and a theater with special acoustics.

At the Monument-Lefebvre Cultural Café, visitors can enjoy tea, coffee, cider, craft beer, and regional wine, surrounded by works by local artists in a century-old building. Before your visit, check whether the café will be open during your stay. The café and site each complement the cultural focus in their own way: with drinks and local art at the café, and community history and an exhibition at the site.

Marshlands and Outdoor Activities

The hiking and cycling trails in Memramcook offer sweeping views of the marshlands. Those who want to include nature and exercise in their trip will find a different focus here than at Monument-Lefebvre. The Memramcook golf course has been operating since 1991 and provides information about its services and activities. Hiking, cycling, and golf are distinct local recreational interests that may factor into your choice of activities.

For the Sentier rivière Memramcook, the Municipality of Memramcook provides a map online and in print at the reception desk of the municipal building. The printed map is available there during opening hours. If you plan to rely on the map, check its availability again before your trip; opening hours are also important for getting a printed copy.

Westmorland County: Regional Perspectives

Westmorland County offers a broader regional perspective. The county borders the Northumberland Strait and the upper reaches of the Bay of Fundy. The marshlands of Westmorland were an important part of the traditional routes of the Mi’kmaq. This geographic and cultural perspective adds another distinct layer to the view of Memramcook.

Westmorland County is home to New Brunswick’s only remaining significant colonial-era fort: Fort Beauséjour/Cumberland, with its museum. The site is a Parks Canada national historic site. Its history includes two sieges: one by the British in 1755 and another by American rebels in 1776.

The Boultenhouse Heritage Centre in Sackville is also part of the region’s historical context. Visitors can explore New Brunswick’s industrial past in shipbuilding there. The centre comprises three buildings: a Georgian house built by the Bulmer family around 1790, a Greek Revival-style house built by Boultenhouse in 1840, and the Anderson Octagonal House, dating to around 1855. Another historical landmark is the second railway line built in the Maritimes, inaugurated in Shediac in 1857.

Choose Your Trip’s Focus

The Sentier rivière Memramcook map provides practical guidance for this trail; the historical examples from Westmorland County broaden the regional perspective. This makes it possible to plan your stay around the topics that interest you most.
