Oromocto offers several clear themes for planning your trip: community history along the riverfront, military heritage sites, water activities and nature. If you’re looking for hotels in Oromocto, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your stay. The Oromocto Riverfront is the community’s historic centre. Information panels share more about its history, and you can also visit monuments and sculptures there.

Riverfront and Military History

Fort Hughes is a replica of the original, built by British forces during the American Revolutionary War. The fort served as a way station for messengers travelling between Halifax, St. John and Quebec City. This historic site thus brings together a modern replica and its former role as a messenger station. Fort Hughes is located in Sir Douglas Hazen Park in Oromocto.

Museums also offer different perspectives: the New Brunswick Military History Museum in Oromocto has more than 50 exhibits. The Canadian Military Engineers Museum’s current location is in the Mitchell Building of the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering on the grounds of CFB Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick. Both sites add further military history themes to the story of Fort Hughes.

Water and Trails

At the Oromocto Riverfront, visitors can rent canoes, kayaks or paddleboards at a small water sports centre. If you plan to make use of this option during your stay, check the current rental information in advance.

The Deer Park Nature & Trans Canada Trail System in Oromocto is suitable for walking, jogging and hiking, as well as non-motorized cycling and wheeling, horseback riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The area also has a wide variety of native flora and fauna. Alongside cultural and historical attractions, you can choose from a range of outdoor activities.

July Event

Oromocto Pioneer Days takes place annually in July. For planning purposes, check the specific event dates for your travel year.
