A 1901 Gothic Revival church, a former CPR railway station, and a forest trail offer different ways to explore Florenceville-Bristol. There is also the Potato World Museum, a park with picnic facilities, and seasonal farm activities. When planning your visit, it’s worth distinguishing between local history, time outdoors, and dates for special events.

Local history on foot and by rail

The Church of the Good Shepherd is a Gothic Revival church built in 1901 and designated a local historic site. Gothic Revival draws on Gothic design in a later period of construction. Its construction date and architectural style therefore offer two distinct ways to learn about local architectural history.

The Bristol Shogomoc Railway Site includes the former Florenceville CPR railway station, about 610 metres of track, and three early CPR passenger cars. The station, tracks, and cars are distinct elements of this historic railway site. Those interested in railway and local history will find more here than just a connection to a former station.

The Heritage Properties Tour is a self-guided route marked by interpretive signs at historic buildings and sites. It lets you explore local heritage themes independently. Unlike the Shiktehawk Trail, the focus here is the route and its signs, not a designated hiking or cycling trail.

A forest trail and a park offer different ways to spend time outdoors

The Shiktehawk Trail is 2.2 kilometres long and suitable for hiking or cycling. It runs through the forest alongside Shiktehawk Stream, and its sections range from easy to moderate. Its length, activities, and varying difficulty levels offer practical guidance when choosing a route to suit your preferred pace and ability.

Riverside Park has gardens, a pavilion, stone paths, and green spaces, and picnicking is also possible. The options are quite different: the trail is for getting active in the forest, while the park offers landscaped green spaces and a place to take a break outdoors.

Potato culture and seasonal experiences

The Potato World Museum features interactive exhibits, agricultural displays, and educational experiences about the importance of the potato to the region. It offers a thematic contrast to the historic buildings and railway: the focus is on the potato and its regional significance.

The museum hosts National French Fry Day every year. The program includes live entertainment, a market, activities for children, and plenty of French fries. The date and program may vary from year to year, so check the event details before planning your visit.

Hunter Brothers Farm also offers seasonal activities. Starting the second weekend of September, its fall festival covers 10 hectares and includes a corn maze, hay wagon rides to the pumpkin patch, a bounce pillow, pedal karts and tricycles, large slides, and a zipline. The program may change from season to season. The farm also has a goat area with a climbing demonstration; children can see farm animals. These farm activities may also be seasonal, so it’s a good idea to check dates and program details in advance.

More historic sites in Carleton County

The wider Carleton County destination has other historic sites to explore. Hartland Covered Bridge was built in 1901 and is the longest covered bridge in the world. Florenceville Covered Bridge dates from 1910 and is 45.3 metres long. Their construction dates, names, and measurements help distinguish the two bridges as separate structures.

Old Carleton County Court House was built in 1833 and offers tours and exhibits; visitors can sit in the prisoner’s dock. Carleton County Military Museum displays artifacts, uniforms, helmets, badges, handmade military models, and flags dating from before the First World War to the present. It also traces the development of the Carleton Light Infantry through the Carleton York Regiment and on to other regiments in New Brunswick.
