Hillsborough combines railway history with a landscape shaped by marshes and wetlands. In town, historic museums sit alongside trails through a waterfowl conservation area and the Wetland Park. When planning a trip, you can therefore focus on different interests: railway collections, a historic birthplace or nature trails.

Railway history and a historic birthplace

The New Brunswick Railway Museum is designated as a local historic site. This is because its location and collections are connected to the railway history of Hillsborough and New Brunswick. The museum features New Brunswick’s largest display of unique railway equipment. Its historic exhibition building also houses railway artifacts and photographs documenting the province’s railway history.

The Steeves House Museum offers a different historical perspective: it is the historic birthplace of the Honourable William Henry Steeves. This means Hillsborough offers two distinct ways to explore the past side by side: railway history through equipment and photographs, and a biographical connection to a prominent person. If you include historic sites in your trip planning, you can explore these themes separately rather than treating them as one and the same story.

Marshes, wetlands and trails

The Acadian Battlefield brings landscape and history together in one place. The natural marshland was the site of the Battle of Hillsborough in 1755. Hiking trails wind through the grounds of a waterfowl conservation area. The site also includes a monument erected in 1922 to commemorate the battle. The landscape, trail and memorial offer different perspectives for a visit: the site can be understood both through its natural features and through the historical event.

Another starting point for hikes is the Wetland Park next to the Hillsborough Visitor Information Centre, which provides access to hiking trails. White Rock in Hillsborough is also one of the main trail destinations. These local attractions offer different ways to put trails at the centre of your trip; the Acadian Battlefield’s marshland setting provides a different landscape focus from the Wetland Park. This allows you to prioritize cultural history, marshland and trails according to your interests without combining them into a single outing.

Crafts and seasonal planning

Local artisans sell their wares in the Artisan Village. Operations may vary by season, so check in advance whether a visit fits your travel dates. This is a different kind of travel experience from a museum or hiking trail: here, the focus is on the artisans’ wares. Together with the historic sites and nature trails, it shows that Hillsborough appeals to a range of interests without requiring every stop to have the same focus.

Albert County from a regional perspective

At the broader destination level, Albert County offers additional landscape and cultural attractions. Fundy National Park lies along the southwestern boundaries of Albert County and borders Chignecto Bay to the south. Trails in the park lead inland to waterfalls in Acadian forests. Highway 114 crosses the park for 21 kilometres, from Wolfe Lake in the northwest to Alma in the southeast, and connects it to the Trans-Canada Highway.

The Albert County Museum & R.B. Bennett Commemorative Centre is also part of this regional perspective. It is located on the site of the county’s 1845 “shiretown” and features 24 exhibits in eight original historic buildings. The landscaped six-acre grounds offer views of the Petitcodiac River and Shepody Bay. Alongside Hillsborough’s museums, Albert County therefore offers additional historical exhibits and a distinctive landscape setting.

The coast of Albert County stretches along the Bay of Fundy; the coastal rivers and forests are well suited to hiking. Mary’s Point Bird Sanctuary offers a seasonal wildlife-watching opportunity: from mid-July to mid-August, it is a stopover for more than 300,000 Semipalmated Sandpipers. These regional attractions are clearly distinct from Hillsborough’s local themes. When planning, you can weigh whether to focus on the town’s museums and trails or on other landscapes and historical exhibits in Albert County.
