Wasa Lake Park lies at the northern end of Wasa Lake. The 144-hectare park protects a representative area of fire-maintained temperate grasslands. This means that, alongside the lake, a protected landscape and trails are tangible points of interest for a stay in Wasa. When planning your day, you can choose between a short nature walk, longer routes on foot or by bike, and activities on the water. The options differ in length and conditions of use, allowing you to choose different focuses for your stay.

Trails and Tours by the Lake

The self-guided Forest of the Rainshadow Interpretive Trail is a 2.7 km loop in the park and a nature walk of about an hour for the whole family. Its short distance and approximate duration set it apart from the longer trails and bike tours by the lake.

The Wasa Lions Way is an 8 km paved trail that runs around the lake and along side roads. It can be used by walkers and cyclists. Compared with the Forest Trail, it is longer and also offers a cycling option; distance and type of use are therefore the main factors when choosing between the two routes.

For a longer bike tour, the 33 km Lazy Lake Bike Loop runs from Wasa Lake to Lazy Lake and back to Wasa Lake via Lazy Lake Road; one section follows Wolf Creek Road. Compared with the Wasa Lions Way, it covers more distance and has a different destination: the Lions Way runs around the lake, while the Bike Loop goes to Lazy Lake and back. The two cycling options therefore differ in both length and route.

Trail conditions can change seasonally. The surface or access may be affected on the Wasa Lions Way, while road and trail conditions may change on the Lazy Lake Bike Loop. Check current conditions before setting out.

Water Sports at Wasa Lake

Wasa Lake is known for its warm water in summer. Water skiing, windsurfing, and canoeing are possible, but conditions vary. For water skiing, designated swimming areas and weather affect use; weather and lake conditions are relevant for windsurfing. Canoeing is suited to calm weather. Since motorboats also use the lake, canoeists should be aware of boat traffic. These differences offer practical points to consider when choosing between water activities.

Recreation History and Event

Wasa Lake Park was established in 1955 to provide recreational access to the warmest swimming destination in the Kootenays. Events include the annual two-day Wasa Lake Triathlon, held at Wasa Lake Provincial Park in Wasa, British Columbia. It features competitions for adults and youth. If you would like to include the triathlon in your travel plans, check the dates for the event in the relevant year.
