Exploring Powell River means encountering both a remarkably well-preserved historic townscape and waterfront trails, as well as a varied cultural program. These different themes offer ways to plan your stay around your own interests.

Historic Townsite and Sports History

The Powell River Townsite Historic District includes about 400 preserved original homes. More than 97 percent of the existing buildings date from before 1940. The site is considered a planned single-industry town from the first half of the 20th century. Its historic character is evident not just in individual buildings, but across a large part of the built environment.

The Patricia Theatre is also located in the Historic Townsite. It is Canada's longest continuously operating movie theatre. During its restoration, the original visitor experience was preserved, while a modern digital picture and sound system was integrated. Another facet of the town's history is showcased by the Powell River Sports Hall of Fame: located in the upper foyer of the Powell River Recreation Complex at 5001 Joyce Avenue, it honours the athletic achievements of current and former Powell River residents.

Hiking, Cycling and Waterfront Trails

Many hiking and cycling trails in Powell River connect to the 180-kilometre Sunshine Coast Trail. Millennium Park, between the Powell River Recreation Complex and Willingdon Beach, has hiking, cycling and walking trails for all difficulty and fitness levels. The Willingdon Beach Trail offers another special connection between trail and history: it follows the waterfront along a former railway line dating from 1910. Logs were once transported along this route to the wharf at the Powell River Company Mill.

For cyclists, the Powell River Bike & Skate Park is located beside the Powell River Recreation Complex. It features jumps and ramps for different cycling abilities, as well as a concrete pump track. Powell River lies directly on the Salish Sea, and numerous public access points to ocean beaches are available year-round. Westview also has a 2.8-kilometre waterfront loop trail. It is fully accessible and offers views of the Salish Sea, as well as several benches where visitors can rest.

Museums and Insights into Forestry History

The Forestry Museum is located at Willingdon Beach, opposite the qathet Museum & Archives. The museum offers insights into qathet's logging and forestry history and displays the equipment used. A visit adds another perspective on the region's forestry to the impressions gained from the historic Townsite.

Music and Performing Arts

Recurring cultural events include International Choral Kathaumixw, held in Powell River every two years and attracting 2,500 singers from around the world. The Sunshine Music Festival is held annually over Labour Day weekend at Palm Beach Park on the Salish Sea, where it has taken place for more than 35 years. Check the specific event dates before travelling.

Classical music and the performing arts are also represented: Powell River hosts the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy (PRISMA) every year. It features renowned guest artists and international music students, who make up the PRISMA Festival Orchestra. The Powell River Festival of the Performing Arts provides a stage each year for amateur performers in music, dance and speech arts. The cultural program thus ranges from choral singing and festivals to performances across different disciplines.
