Maple Ridge’s local trail network includes more than 100 km of cycling and hiking trails. When choosing a place to stay, you can start by deciding between cycling and walking. Individual destinations offer other highlights: Whonnock Lake features a swimming area and water sports alongside hiking trails, while the size of Kanaka Creek Regional Park gives it a different emphasis. Historic homes, a museum building and a year-round cultural program round out the nature-focused options.
Nature and Activities on the Water
Whonnock Lake Park has a small sandy beach, a swimming area, hiking trails and a playground. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and boating are available at Whonnock Lake. This offers different ways to plan your visit: you can consider the park for its trails and facilities or focus on one of the three activities on the water.
Kanaka Creek Regional Park offers a different kind of natural setting. The 400-hectare wilderness park stretches along 12 km of Kanaka Creek. Cliff Falls is the centrepiece of the park and is suitable for picnics. The area and creekside length represent different scales: one describes the park’s size, the other the stretch along the waterway. This can help when comparing it with destinations focused on individual recreational activities.
Jerry Sulina Park has a historic dike trail system and an off-leash dog park area with water access. These are distinct features to consider when choosing a nature destination: historic trails on the one hand and an area for dogs on the other. Allco Fish Hatchery provides information about sockeye salmon conservation and their release into the Alouette River. Here, the focus is on education and conservation rather than trails or water activities.
Historic Places and Culture
The Fraser River Heritage Walk connects important historic sites in Port Haney via a paved walking path. The route brings several places together, while the museums and houses offer specific points of interest in individual buildings. This lets you consider whether you are more interested in connecting historic sites or in a particular house or exhibition.
Haney House has been open to the public since 1981 and has furnished rooms on both the ground and upper floors. Maple Ridge Museum is housed in a former residence for the manager of the Port Haney Brick and Tile Company, built in 1907. Its permanent ground-floor exhibition covers the Katzie First Nation, the pioneer settlement era and local industry. The two houses therefore offer different historical perspectives: Haney House displays furnished rooms on two levels, while the museum’s permanent exhibition covers three subject areas.
Maple Ridge ACT (Arts, Culture, Theatre) Arts Centre hosts a wide range of events, from local school bands and dance performances to major productions and concerts. Its calendar includes theatre, dance and comedy performances, as well as music events, throughout the year. This means that, alongside historic destinations, you can choose from a changing lineup of cultural events, spanning everything from performing arts to music.
