Bafoussam brings together architecture, crafts and art in clearly identifiable places. The broader West travel destination also offers distinct themes related to museums, tea production, landscapes and water sports. This distinction makes it possible to consider local culture alongside other regional interests without conflating the places.

Architecture and Culture in Bafoussam

The Bafoussam Chiefdom has 13 pyramid-shaped roofs. Their recurring form is a distinctive architectural feature and gives the building ensemble a specific formal point of reference. This makes it possible to consider the Chiefdom as a distinct element of Bafoussam’s cultural profile.

The Village Artisanal Régional de Bafoussam (VARBAF) comprises shops, training workshops, production spaces and permanent exhibition spaces. Its scope thus ranges from trade and training to production and permanent exhibitions. Crafts here can be appreciated as more than finished products: production and training areas are also part of the centre’s profile.

The Galerie Princesse art gallery is part of the Centre culturel Pierre Moyo. It provides a distinct focus on art alongside VARBAF’s themes of crafts and production. Before planning a specific visit, check what each venue offers on your chosen date.

More to Discover in the Broader West Travel Destination

In Dschang, within the broader West travel destination, the Musée des Civilisations explores Cameroon’s history and cultural diversity. The interpretation centre covers around 1,200 m². Its symbolic contemporary architecture and location on the shore of the town lake add two specific spatial features to the subject matter. Its focus therefore differs from Bafoussam’s local cultural venues: the museum centres on Cameroon’s history and diversity.

At the Djuttitsa tea plantations near Dschang, offered activities include walks among the tea rows, factory visits and tastings. The four processing steps are withering, rolling, oxidation and drying. Rolling and oxidation are separate steps in the sequence. The tea experience thus includes walks among the rows as well as processing and tasting.

The Métché Waterfalls, at the edge of Bafoussam, are also within the broader West travel destination. They are about 40 to 50 m high and are considered an important place of remembrance and for Bamiléké rituals. Lake Baleng lies at an altitude of 1,500 m and fills a crater 800 m wide; it is considered the best-known lake in Cameroon’s West Region. These details illustrate contrasting landscapes: a waterfall with cultural significance and a lake defined by its altitude and crater shape.

For water sports, head to Dschang: the water sports centre at the town lake offers pedal-boat and motorboat rides, canoeing, kayaking and children’s activities; the rides are open to everyone. The Dschang water sports club also organises kayaking trips on the Noun. This route has Class 1 to 2 rapids. The activities at the town lake therefore differ from the organised river trips both in location and in the type of route described. For tea and water sports, it is advisable to check availability for your chosen date before making plans.
