At 4,070 metres, Mount Cameroon National Park is home to the highest peak in West and Central Africa. From this striking elevation, the view turns to other natural and historical themes in Southwest.

Nature in Mount Cameroon National Park

The park features well-developed trekking routes and eco-lodges. It is also considered a biodiversity hotspot; its wildlife includes elephants, chimpanzees, drills and a diverse bird population. The routes offer an active focus, while the diversity of species draws attention to animals and birds. The altitude, trekking and wildlife give the protected area several distinct facets: a measurable benchmark, a nature-focused experience for active travellers, and an ecological profile.

Cameroon in a wider perspective

Elsewhere in Cameroon, Korup National Park offers a distinct natural highlight. It is described as a rainforest with ancient trees, rare and endemic species, and cascading waterfalls. The park is also presented as a birdwatching destination, with more than 410 bird species, including many with a limited range.

Bimbia and its historical traces

Another way to explore the region’s history leads to Bimbia. The site preserves material traces of the slave trade: a building where enslaved people were held, chains, an oil mill and cannons. The evidence ranges from the building to objects and weapons; together, these show different forms of material heritage. The variety of traces draws attention to more than a single structure. The remains have not been restored or reconstructed. Within the site, steps and a small bridge installed by the city administration make access easier. Bimbia is also considered an emerging and thriving ecotourism area.

Plants, animals and sea in Limbe

The Limbe Botanical Garden is an excursion destination where you can discover numerous plant species. Check the garden directly for current visitor information before your visit.

The Limbe Zoological Centre was established in 1993 jointly by the Government of Cameroon and the Pandrillus Foundation to collect and return to their natural habitat domesticated wild animals and animals confiscated from poachers. The centre is home to numerous exotic animals, including pythons, primates, crocodiles, birds and turtles. While the garden focuses on plant species, the zoological centre highlights animals and its founding purpose.

The Limbe City Council describes the cooling sea breeze and warm, calm sea as ideal conditions for swimming all day. This coastal perspective adds another side of Limbe to its botanical and zoological themes.

For a thematic choice, the distinction is clear: the national park combines altitude, trekking and wildlife; Bimbia focuses on historical evidence, while Limbe brings together plants, animals and the sea. This lets you choose your trip’s focus according to which of these discoveries interests you most.
