Kumba can be explored on three levels: the urban area, activities in the surrounding municipality, and other destinations in the wider Southwest region. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these levels: urban greenery and nearby landscapes provide the local setting, while regional nature and cultural themes offer distinct focal points.

Urban Greenery and Crater Lake

A crater lake lies about three kilometres northwest of the city centre. Its water is calm, with no strong waves. Ornamental trees line the main streets, and green spaces offer a place to relax at midday. The local landscape ranges from urban greenery to a lake in the surrounding area. The lake and green spaces offer different perspectives on Kumba: its urban character and its natural surroundings.

Water and Nature in the Municipality

The activities available vary depending on the location and season. During the dry season, tourists and Kumba residents visit a nearby lake for swimming and paddling in boats. Kumba Waterfalls are located on the outskirts of Kumba I and are suitable for picnics and hikes. At Lake Barombi Mbo, you can go canoeing, birdwatching and take nature photographs. You can choose between water activities, exploring the area around the waterfalls, and observing nature.

Southwest: Nature and History

In the wider Southwest region, Mount Cameroon National Park offers a distinct focal point. It is home to the highest peak in West and Central Africa, at 4,070 metres, and has well-developed trekking routes and eco-lodges. The park is considered a biodiversity hotspot, with elephants, chimpanzees, drills and a diverse birdlife. Here, you can combine an interest in trekking with wildlife and a prominent mountain destination.

Bimbia and Its History

Another theme in the Southwest is Bimbia. The site preserves physical traces of the slave trade: a building where enslaved people were held, chains, an oil mill and cannons. The remains have not been restored or reconstructed. Stairs and a small bridge built by the municipal authorities make it easier to get around the site. Bimbia is also considered an emerging and thriving ecotourism area.

Botanical and Zoological Attractions in Limbe

In Limbe, the city highlights the Botanical Garden as a destination where visitors can discover numerous plant species. Check the garden’s current visiting arrangements in advance. The Limbe Zoological Centre was founded in 1993 jointly by the Government of Cameroon and the Pandrillus Foundation. Its aim was to collect domesticated wild animals and animals confiscated from poachers and return them to their natural habitat. The wildlife includes numerous exotic animals, including pythons, primates, crocodiles, birds and turtles. Limbe thus offers botanical discoveries and wildlife protection as distinct themes.
