In Itabaiana, nature and outdoor activities sit alongside history and regional cuisine. Parque Nacional da Serra de Itabaiana offers waterfalls and swimming spots; its trails have different starting points and, in some cases, clearly described requirements. Markets, historic sites, and local specialties provide further reasons to tailor your stay to your interests.

Serra Landscapes and Swimming Spots

Parque Nacional da Serra de Itabaiana lies mostly within the municipality of Itabaiana in the state of Sergipe. Its area also extends into Areia Branca, Laranjeiras, Itaporanga D’Ajuda, and Campo do Brito. The national park brings together Atlantic Forest and Caatinga ecosystems in a water-rich landscape with waterfalls that encourage ecotourism.

The park is located along the BR-235. A gate at the main entrance marks the access point, and an unpaved road leads to Poço das Moças. Check road conditions before setting out. The Poço is a dark pool with a strong current that is suitable for swimming. Visitors entering the park through the main gate reach it as their first swimming stop.

At PilÔes da Ribeira, there is a waterfall with clear water where visitors can swim. Above it are three small pools that are also suitable for swimming. Access to PoçÔes da Ribeira is different: the natural area is in Povoado Ribeira, and the route follows an unpaved road before reaching a low, steep rock face. Crossing it requires physical effort.

Hiking Trails with Specific Requirements

The Trilha do Paredão e do Caldeirão can start at the edge of the BR-235 near Quatro Água or in Povoado Alto do Vento. Due to steep climbs and sections that run along a rocky slope, the trail is considered very difficult. The ascent takes an average of four hours; difficulty and trail conditions may vary. Treat this time as an average and check conditions before setting out.

Cachoeira Grande, also called TrĂȘs Cachoeiras, is the first stop on the CaldeirĂŁo trail and is described as the largest and tallest waterfall on the route. Trilha do ParedĂŁo dos FalcĂ”es is a different trail: it starts at Parque dos FalcĂ”es and continues to waterfalls near the Serra summit. No hiking time is given here for this trail, so its duration cannot be compared with the average ascent time for the CaldeirĂŁo trail.

The Via-Sacra trail starts at the national park’s main entrance and ends a few metres beyond the ICMBio headquarters. Each year during Holy Week, it attracts worshippers of various religions who fulfil vows and take part in pilgrimages. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before your visit.

Birds of Prey and History

Parque dos FalcÔes in Itabaiana is a centre for breeding, propagation, and conservation of birds of prey; its work also includes care and rehabilitation. The birds in its care include hawks, falcons, and owls. This conservation work has a different focus from the hiking trails and swimming spots in the national park.

The village of Igreja Velha is home to an archaeological site that can be considered a regional historic landmark. The Ruínas da Igreja Velha preserve the site of the Santo Antînio chapel, which dates from the first half of the 17th century. At the time, it was a religious centre and the settlement’s focal point for the population of the Itabaiana region.

The Rota da Serra also brings together a range of themes. Under Law No. 2.471/2021, it is the official tourist route of the municipality of Itabaiana, linking scenic landscapes, religion, shopping, ecotourism, culture, and gastronomy. The Via-Sacra trail represents the religious aspect; historic sites, nature, and local cuisine add the other themes.

Markets and Regional Specialties

Feira Livre de Itabaiana has more than 500 stalls and attracts visitors from neighbouring towns as well as local residents. It takes place twice a week. If the market is an important part of your plans, check locally in advance for the current market days.

In the town centre, at Praça de Eventos, is Casa de Farinha. For decades, it has produced and sold typical Northeastern foods throughout the year. Its offerings include biscuits, cakes in a range of flavours, tapioca and peanut beijus, and homemade sweets. Casa de Farinha therefore offers a culinary counterpoint to the trip’s nature and history themes.

Shopping Peixoto adds shopping, dining, and entertainment options, including a food court and four cinema screens. If you are going for a particular shop or offering, check the latest details in advance, as individual tenants may change.
