São Roque combines industrial history and religious heritage with opportunities to include nature trails and birdwatching in your travel plans. Brasital and the churches offer insights into different chapters of the city’s history, while trails and recurring events provide other highlights. When choosing where to stay, consider which of these themes matter most to you during your visit.

Brasital and the Churches of São Roque

Brasital was built in 1890 by industrialist Enrico Dell’Acqua and was one of the first textile industries in the state of São Paulo. The complex includes a wooded area of about 30,000 square meters. Brasital is also home to the Caminho das Águas ecological trail: about 2,000 meters long, it is considered a short route and allows visitors to experience the natural landscape. The industrial history and the trail offer different ways to connect with the area during a stay.

The churches also differ in their historical and artistic features. The Igreja da Matriz has paintings by the Irmãos Gentilli and mosaic windows depicting the life of Saint São Roque. The Igreja de São Benedito was built in 1855 by enslaved people using rammed earth. Its construction history points to a different era from that of the new Igreja da Matriz, built between 1934 and 1941.

Religious Traditions and Events

On Morro do Cruzeiro there is a cross and an image of São Roque, the city’s patron saint. A novena takes place there in late July and early August, drawing hundreds of worshippers to celebrate the city’s anniversary and the feast of Saint São Roque. Exact dates may change, so check them before your trip.

The Igreja de São Benedito hosts religious and musical events, as well as choir gatherings, throughout the year. The annual Triduum in honor of São Benedito includes a small fair in the square in front of the church, a Mass, and a procession. The specific dates for this tradition may also vary. If these events are important to your trip, it is worth checking the relevant calendar.

Hiking Trails and Nature

Parque Natural Municipal Mata da Câmara is a remnant of the Atlantic Forest covering about 130 hectares. The park has hiking trails and opportunities for birdwatching. These offer two different ways to explore the landscape: walking and observing birds. The approximate area also gives an idea of the size of this natural area.

Morro do Saboó can be reached via a moderately difficult hiking trail. Recanto da Cascata offers another named route, the Trilha da Cascata, which reopened in 2023. Current access conditions are not specifically listed, so check access information before visiting. The two hiking destinations have different information available: the difficulty level of the trail is described for Morro do Saboó, while the reopening date is given for the Trilha da Cascata.

Sunday Market at Recanto da Cascata

The Feira Permanente takes place on Sundays at Recanto da Cascata. It offers food, handicrafts, flowers, and products from horticulture and agriculture. The market adds a regular event focused on regional products and crafts to the area’s nature and cultural experiences. Check the date before your trip if you plan to visit the market.
