Churches, Crafts, and Culture in Town

The Igreja da Imaculada Conceição in Bairro do Quilombo dates back to 1805 and was built from adobe. The Igreja Matriz de São Bento was built from rammed earth around the middle of the 19th century by enslaved people. It is used for religious celebrations and sightseeing. Check current visiting hours before your visit.

The Associação de Artesãos Arte no Quilombo offers insights into local crafts. It has more than 80 members who make items and products from banana leaves, corn leaves, bamboo, and other materials in Bairro do Quilombo. Galeria A complements the cultural offerings with exhibitions, talks, film screenings, and cultural events. It also offers guided visits for school groups; check the current program before visiting.

The Museu do Zé Pereira tells the story of the century-old figures of Bloco Zé Pereira, which are part of São Bento Do Sapucaí’s cultural and historical heritage. Congada is performed at community festivals as well as at fairs and exhibitions. Both offer different insights into local culture: one tells the story of the figures, while the other is a tradition performed at events.
