In Roseira, one historical thread leads from a chapel to the town that developed later; another opens up the landscape along the Rio Paraíba do Sul. You can shape your trip around different interests: the origins of the town, its sacred and cultural landmarks, or its protected natural areas.

From the Caminho Real to the Town

In the 18th century, a settlement grew up around the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário, from which Roseira emerged. Today, the chapel is called Nossa Senhora da Piedade. At the time, the settlement lay on the Caminho Real, which connected São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. This refers to the settlement’s historical connection with the route; it does not describe a present-day hiking trail.

Another turning point came in March 1877, with the opening of the railway station. The town of Roseira that developed later took shape around this time; it was then still a district of Guaratinguetá. The early settlement and the development around the railway station thus mark two different points in the town’s history. The Capela Nossa Senhora da Piedade and Fazenda Boa Vista are among the historic buildings that bear witness to Roseira’s past.

River Landscape and Protected Areas

The Rio Paraíba do Sul flows for approximately 16.258 kilometers within Roseira’s municipal boundaries. The Área de Proteção Ambiental de Roseira Velha along the river contains native vegetation and remnants of the Atlantic Forest. The formations described include tree-like, fruit-bearing, shrubby, and herbaceous plants. Roseira is also classified as an Atlantic Forest floodplain forest along the Paraíba do Sul.

Fazenda Boa Vista also connects the town’s name with its landscape: UNESCO recognizes it as an outpost of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve. Roseira is also part of the Área de Proteção Ambiental Mananciais do Rio Paraíba do Sul. These designations reflect several aspects of the area’s natural environment—from riverside vegetation to officially designated protected areas.

Cultural Sites and Religious Heritage

The Santuário da Sagrada Face has a museum. The Mosteiro da Sagrada Face houses a replica of the Shroud of Turin, which a municipal tourism description dated May 9, 2022, describes as recognized by the Vatican. A municipal tourism notice also places the Mosteiro on a Vale da Fé travel route. In a report dated October 10, 2023, Roseira was included in a Vale da Fé route proposed by the Região Turística da Fé.

The Memorial Roseirense offers another perspective on local history. It opened in 2022 in the former railway station building. Its collection includes photographs, objects, books, magazines, and memories of people who left a legacy in Roseira. Together with the historic chapel and the religious sites mentioned above, it offers a cultural theme that encompasses both the town’s development and personal memories.

Planning a Stay in Roseira

For getting around by road, two routes are particularly relevant: the Rodovia Presidente Dutra (BR-116) crosses Roseira’s municipal area. The Rodovia Presidente Washington Luís (SP-062) connects Roseira with Aparecida and Pindamonhangaba.

When looking for hotels in Roseira, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: local history and the Memorial, religious cultural sites, or the river and protected-area landscape. This makes it easier to choose accommodation that matches the themes you want to explore during your stay. Roseira’s history and natural surroundings offer different starting points rather than prescribing a single focus for your visit.
