Hiking trails are available at Pico do Urubu, which is more than 1,100 meters above sea level. Mogi das Cruzes also offers natural attractions with a range of different features, as well as historic cultural sites and places of remembrance. The selection ranges from biodiversity, elevation, and hiking to protected cultural heritage, collections, and recognition of Japanese immigration.

Nature: biodiversity, elevation, and protected areas

Parque Natural Municipal Francisco Affonso de Mello – Chiquinho Veríssimo is located in the Serra do Itapeti and covers 352.3 hectares. The park is home to native Atlantic Forest flora and fauna. It has a recorded 372 plant species, 207 bird species, 62 mammal species, and 40 amphibian species. Plants make up the largest of the four numbered groups, followed by birds; mammals and amphibians complete the breakdown. This offers a way to explore biodiversity through specific plant and animal groups.

Pico do Urubu offers a different natural highlight. It is more than 1,100 meters above sea level, and hiking trails are available. While the Parque Natural is notable for its size and recorded biodiversity, Pico do Urubu stands out for its elevation and hiking. If you would rather focus on a hike than on biodiversity, Pico do Urubu offers a different natural highlight.

Parque das Neblinas lies on the border between Mogi das Cruzes and Bertioga. It is a private reserve managed by Instituto Ecofuturo. Unlike Parque Natural Municipal Francisco Affonso de Mello – Chiquinho Veríssimo in the Serra do Itapeti, it is privately managed and distinguished by its location on the border. The two parks therefore highlight different aspects: the Parque Natural’s size and recorded species, and Parque das Neblinas’s private management and geographic location.

Cultural heritage, collections, and remembrance

Igreja da Ordem 1ª do Carmo is one of Mogi das Cruzes’s historic cultural assets protected by IPHAN. It is a specific point of interest if you are interested in protected historic heritage.

Museu Mogiano, also known as Museu Histórico e Pedagógico “Visconde Mauá,” houses several items relating to the history of the people of Mogi das Cruzes and the surrounding region. Its subject matter therefore extends beyond the city’s population to include the region as well. If you are particularly interested in the history of the population, the collection offers a different perspective from the protected status of Igreja da Ordem 1ª do Carmo.

Parque Centenário da Imigração Japonesa was inaugurated in 2008 to celebrate 100 years of Japanese immigration to Brazil. It also recognizes the contribution of Japanese immigrants in Mogi das Cruzes. This occasion offers another historical focus: unlike the collection at Museu Mogiano, it centers on the anniversary of immigration to Brazil and recognition of the immigrants’ contribution in Mogi das Cruzes.
