Jaú combines historic buildings with cultural events and shopping opportunities. If you want to choose between architecture, city life and events during your trip, you will find a range of options here. A conservation area is also located nearby. This means Jaú cannot be reduced to a single museum or shopping destination.
Churches, Museum and Protected Buildings
A special room was established in 2001 at the Museu Municipal José Raphael Toscano de Jahu. It houses objects belonging to Comandante João Ribeiro de Barros, who was born in Jaú. In 1927, he became the first aviator from the Americas to cross the South Atlantic without maritime support. The exhibition thus connects the story of a well-known aviator with his roots in the city.
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio stands in the center of Jaú. Built in the 19th century, the church features Neo-Gothic architecture, with tall towers, colorful stained-glass windows and elaborate ornamental details. Those interested in architectural history can compare these features with the Italian Renaissance style of the Mercado Municipal. The market was inaugurated in 1899; both buildings represent distinct architectural styles in Jaú.
Protected buildings also form part of the city’s historic character. The building of the Jahu Clube is protected by the Conselho de Preservação do Patrimônio Cultural de Jahu (Conppac). Colégio São Norberto is also protected as cultural heritage and is one of Jaú’s historic heritage sites. It ceased operating as a school in 1968; today, the building serves as the abbey of the Premonstratensians of Jaú. If you would like to visit Colégio São Norberto, check access arrangements before your visit.
Cultural Events and Dates
The Festival de Inverno is held every year in July. The 2025 edition was the 32nd and offered free attractions for a range of audiences and artistic interests. The program may include exhibitions, concerts, markets, listening events, theater, hip-hop culture, activities for children, dance and circus performances. Offerings vary from one edition to another, so check the dates and current program before your trip rather than assuming that a previous edition’s offerings will be available.
Another cultural venue is the Estação do Som e das Letras. It hosts a range of cultural events organized by Jaú’s Secretaria de Cultura e Turismo, as well as events organized together with residents, artists and cultural professionals. For your planning, it is worth checking specific event dates. This will help you match the cultural offerings to the dates of your visit without assuming that any particular program will be on.
At the traditional Feira de Artesanato at Jardim de Baixo, Praça da República, craftspeople display their products. No regular schedule has been established, and dates may vary. Check in advance whether the fair will take place during your stay.
Markets and Shopping Destinations
The Mercado Municipal Seiko Onozaki Kataoka is a commercial center with a variety of products and food. Since the selection may change, check current availability before planning a specific purchase. The inauguration of the Mercado Municipal in 1899, in the Italian Renaissance style, also remains a notable date in Jaú’s architectural history.
Jaú is also associated with the shoe trade. The themed shopping center Território do Calçado has approximately 200 factory outlets and attracts tourists. The approximate number of stores and their operating status may change, so check what is currently available before planning a specific visit. Shopping do Calçado is also one of the city’s main attractions. Together, these shopping destinations offer a different way to experience Jaú than its churches, historic buildings and cultural events.
Conservation Area and Travel Information
The Reserva Ecológica Amadeu Botelho is located near Jaú. The RPPN conservation area covers 143 hectares and is two kilometers from the city. This designated conservation area is part of Jaú’s surroundings, alongside the cultural and commercial attractions within the city.
Important for planning your trip: the Estação Ferroviária de Jahu is currently served exclusively by freight trains; passengers cannot board or alight there. Check this travel information again before your trip, as operating conditions may change.
