Discover Itanhaém through its different highlights: colonial buildings and religious heritage sit alongside coastal landscapes, rivers and trails through the Mata Atlântica. You can use these themes to plan your trip and decide whether culture, nature or activities on the water should take center stage.

Colonial Heritage and Religious Sites

Itanhaém’s Centro Histórico is an ensemble of colonial buildings dating from the 16th century. It includes the Convento Nossa Senhora da Conceição, the Casa de Câmara e Cadeia, the Igreja Matriz de Sant’Anna, the Casario and the Beco de Sant’Anna. These names give the historic center a tangible structure: rather than looking at just one building, you can explore its history through the ensemble’s several distinct components.

The Convento Nossa Senhora da Conceição is religious heritage with a history of more than 400 years and is protected by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan). Municipal visitor information dated July 17, 2025, lists visiting hours from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free admission. Confirm the hours before your trip, as operating information may change.

The former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia houses the Museu Conceição de Itanhaém. Documents, photographs and other records on display include Padre José de Anchieta’s baptismal certificate and Benedicto Calixto’s book “Vila de Itanhaém.” The museum’s contents add written and photographic records to the historic center’s story; exhibition details may change.

Cama de Anchieta also connects the landscape with religious tradition. The rock formation lies on the coastal hillside of Praia do Sonho and is associated with the reputed meditation, poetry and prayer of the Blessed José de Anchieta. It can be reached via the Passarela de Anchieta or over the rocks. The 220-meter-long wooden walkway connects Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes with Cama de Anchieta and is open to visitors free of charge. Check access conditions before your visit.

Religious traditions include Itanhaém’s Festa da Padroeira, with Masses, a novena, a fair, cultural performances, a pilgrimage and a procession, as well as the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo. The latter is a folkloric and religious event with rituals and cultural expressions passed down through generations. The annual program may vary; if you would like to attend a celebration, check the dates and program for that year.

Coastal Landscapes and Trails Through the Mata Atlântica

Itanhaém has about 26 kilometers of beaches, along with rivers, rocky coastline and islands. This approximate length gives an idea of some of the destination’s landscape diversity; for specific interests, the individual places and their features are more informative than a single coastline figure.

For a shorter nature walk, consider the ecological trail at Morro do Sapucaitava: the easy route takes about 30 minutes and has visitor signage and a tourist information kiosk. Check the trail and facilities before your visit. At Morro, sea winds and salt spray shape the Mata Atlântica vegetation.

The Vale do Rio Branco route offers a different experience. It covers 14 kilometers of rural road through the Mata Atlântica, passing farms and the slopes of Morro Guapuruvu and following the Rio Branco. The two options therefore differ considerably in length and route: the trail at Morro do Sapucaitava is an easy walk of about half an hour, while the Vale do Rio Branco route is a 14-kilometer journey through rural landscapes. Road and trail conditions may change.

Water Activities and Distinctive Coastal Settings

Water activities also offer different experiences. The 7-kilometer Rio Itanhaém offers opportunities for nautical tourism with jet skis, banana boats and small motorboats. The municipal tourism description lists stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing, wakeboarding, kayaking and rides on watercraft as suitable activities at Boca da Barra. The offerings are therefore not identical: the river description mentions specific types of boats, while the Boca da Barra description lists several different water sports. Activity availability and conditions may change.

Praia dos Pescadores is considered an excellent surfing spot because of its long, perfect waves. Ilha das Cabras, also known as Givurá, can be crossed on foot at low tide, provided the tides allow passage. Check local tide conditions before planning a crossing. These examples offer different coastal experiences: waves define Praia dos Pescadores’ surfing profile, while the tides determine whether passage is possible at Ilha das Cabras.

Itanhaém offers everything from historic architecture and religious traditions to nature trails, river activities and coastal spots, each with its own conditions. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide which of these themes matter most for your trip; check visiting hours, programs, trail conditions and tides as relevant to your plans.
