Canas offers culture-minded travellers several distinct points of interest: historic churches, fazendas in different neighbourhoods and religious festivities. When looking for a holiday rental, it helps to first decide what to focus on—architecture and local history, a festival date or the wider tourism context.

Churches and Local History

The Igreja de Santo Antonio, also known as Igreja Caninhas, was built in 1904 by Italian immigrants. Canas thus connects a specific church building with a history of Italian immigration. The Igreja de São Benedito is located in Bairro do Cantagalo. The Igreja Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora was built in the colonial style. The three churches offer different historical, local and architectural perspectives on Canas: construction date and immigration history, neighbourhood connections and architectural style.

Historic Fazendas and Religious Festivities

The town’s history also includes two historic fazendas. Fazenda São Pedro is located in Bairro Caninhas and was built in 1945; Fazenda Santo Antonio is in Bairro Vassoural and was built in 1950. Their construction dates are five years apart, and they are in different neighbourhoods. Together with the churches, the fazendas add further historic local connections to Canas’s cultural attractions.

Canas is under the patronage of Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora, whose feast is celebrated on 24 May. Every year, a festival in honour of the saint is also held at the Igreja de Santo Antonio. Dates and programmes may change. If you want to plan your trip around a religious festival, check the latest information before booking.

Cultural Programme and Festa Italiana

A cultural tourism programme in Canas organises courses in gastronomy, regional handicrafts, sacred art and rural tourism. Individual offerings may vary. The Festa Italiana is also one of Canas’s cultural events. For an edition billed as the 20th Festa Italiana, traditional food, dance and music performances, handicrafts, a religious celebration and cultural attractions were announced. Separately, a report from July 2026 describes the Festa Italiana as an annual event. Future editions may have a different programme.

Location and Regional Context

Canas is located on the Rio Paraíba do Sul. The Rodovia Presidente Dutra and the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil pass through the town. These provide a geographical and infrastructure overview, alongside the municipality’s cultural points of interest.

Canas is part of the Programa de Turismo da Estrada Real, the Roteiro da Fé and the Trilha da Independência. The municipality is also part of the Consórcio de Turismo “Caminhos do Rio Paraíba”. These affiliations add a regional tourism perspective to the picture of local history.

Plan Your Stay

When looking for a holiday rental in Canas, it is worth deciding on the reason for your trip first: a specific festival with a date you have checked, or a flexible stay focused on the town’s historical and architectural heritage.
