Joinville offers a range of thematic experiences: museums focus on archaeological heritage and the history of immigration in southern Brazil, while art and nature provide further highlights. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish the museums by their respective themes and the nature destinations by their specific features—from several trails in Parque Municipal do Morro do Finder to the elevated forest trail at Mirante de Joinville.

Museums, History and Art

The Museu Arqueológico de Sambaqui de Joinville preserves Brazil’s archaeological heritage. It also generates knowledge about the peoples who built sambaquis and lived in the region more than 5,000 years ago.

The Museu Nacional de Imigração e Colonização focuses on a different aspect of history. Its collection includes cultural artifacts, documents and publications relating to the history of immigration in southern Brazil. Different types of material are thus brought together here around a shared theme. The museum is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check the opening hours before you arrive and plan your visit within this time window.

Estação da Memória is located in Joinville’s former railway station. The building was constructed in 1906 and listed as Brazilian architectural heritage in 2008. The dates mark two different milestones: 1906 for its construction and 2008 for its heritage listing. The historic railway station thus connects its former function with its later recognition as architectural heritage.

The Museu Casa Fritz Alt offers another distinct perspective. The exhibition “Formas Biográficas” at the Museu Casa Fritz Alt features works by Fritz Alt; information panels explain his creative process. If this particular exhibition is a deciding factor in your visit, check in advance whether it will be open on your travel dates.

Trails and Nature Destinations

Parque Municipal do Morro do Finder has a main trail that leads visitors to four additional trails in the park. The trails are therefore not described as a single path: the main trail leads to four other routes within the park. Pedra do Veloso is located at the summit of Morro do Iririú, also within Parque Municipal do Morro do Finder. It is used for activities such as rappelling, climbing and nature observation. These activities offer different kinds of experiences—from climbing on the rock to observing nature.

At Mirante de Joinville, the lookout tower and elevated forest trail are the key features. The trail leads to Janela do Mirante. So, in addition to the tower, a named endpoint of the forest trail is part of the visit. The nature destinations differ in their described features: at Parque Municipal do Morro do Finder, the focus is on several trails and activities at Pedra do Veloso; at Mirante de Joinville, it is the tower and the trail to Janela do Mirante. This comparison can help you choose based on the kind of nature experience you want.
