Discover Chapecó from several perspectives: nature and walking trails, museums and historic buildings, as well as religious culture and sporting history, each offer a different focus. For your stay, you can start by considering which of these sides of the city interests you most.
Nature Spots and Religious Culture
Ecoparque has a green area with native trees and eucalyptus trees, a lake with a bridge, and three walking trails. It offers both green landscapes and trails for an active visit.
Gruta da Sede Figueira offers a different natural setting: it features three caves formed in rock and a waterfall about eight metres high. The Gruta is also home to the Trilha dos Mistérios do Rosário. Along it are 15 sandstone sculptures symbolising the mysteries of the Rosary. Nature and religious imagery come together here in a tangible way.
The penitential pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lourdes takes place at the Gruta every year, attracting about 5,000 people. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the exact date in advance.
Walking Trails and Parks
Parque Palmital has a wooded area with native tree species that is suitable for walks. The park also features a sculpture of Sr. Angelo Sartori, a pioneer of the region. The site thus combines a walk through a wooded area with a cultural connection.
Parque das Palmeiras has a walking path and a 520 m² children's playground. The parks therefore have distinct features: native trees and a walking area define Parque Palmital, while Parque das Palmeiras pairs its walking path with a clearly sized playground.
Museums and the History of Chapecó
The Museu de História e Arte de Chapecó is located in the former city hall. The building was protected as historical and cultural heritage in 2007 and retains features of 1950s architecture. Its exhibition includes archaeological objects from settlements dating back about 7,000 years. The museum welcomes school groups from public and private schools of all ages for educational visits.
The Museu da Colonização de Chapecó is housed in the Casa Histórica da família Bertaso in Parque de Exposições Valmor Lunardi. It presents aspects of Chapecó's colonisation history, as well as the exchanges and conflicts between the various ethnic groups involved in this process. Educational institutions can arrange guided visits and educational activities for different age groups.
The Museu da Cultura Italiana in Comunidade da Colônia Cella focuses on another historical theme: with about 300 objects, it preserves part of the history of Italian immigration. The collection consists mainly of farming tools used by residents in the early 20th century. The three museums therefore have clearly distinct thematic focuses: archaeological finds, colonisation history and Italian immigration.
Buildings, Art and Sporting History
The Monumento “O Desbravador” is a symbol of Chapecó's historical and cultural heritage. It honours the colonisers who settled Chapecó and the west of Santa Catarina. Capela São Carlos offers another perspective on architectural history: it was built in the Franciscan style from wood and zinc sheets. In the 1950s, Frei João Vianey Erdrich proposed building 16 more chapels following the same architectural model. Capela São Carlos was restored in 2000 to preserve and enhance its history and culture.
The art gallery at Centro de Cultura e Eventos is also part of the city's cultural scene: since 2012, it has been used for exhibitions and to promote visual arts in Chapecó. For sports fans, Arena Condá is another point of interest. Inaugurated in 1976, the stadium is the home ground of Associação Chapecoense de Futebol and has hosted national and international events.
When choosing where to stay in Chapecó, you can start with your main interest: the museums and buildings offer different historical perspectives, while Ecoparque, the Gruta and the parks provide nature and walking experiences. Arena Condá adds sporting history to the mix. This lets you plan your trip around a specific theme without reducing Chapecó's many sides to a single experience.
