The municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra lies in the Planalto Sul Catarinense at an elevation of 1,245 meters. Known as the “Capital das Águas,” it is home to 35 waterfalls and 14 rivers within its municipal boundaries. In the town center, Igreja Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro serves as a cultural landmark: it stands in the center and is surrounded by a square. The natural attractions are located within the municipality and showcase a variety of landscapes. When looking for accommodation in Bom Jardim da Serra, first consider whether highlands, canyons, waterfalls or the town center will be the focus of your stay.

Serra do Rio do Rastro: Curves and Views

Serra do Rio do Rastro is a road with 284 curves. The section in question of SC-390 runs between Lauro Müller and Bom Jardim da Serra; at an elevation of 1,460 meters, the Serra offers panoramic views. The sequence of curves and the views from above are two distinct aspects of this road landscape. When planning your trip, you can decide whether the road itself or the panoramic views are of particular interest to you.

Canyons in the Municipality

Cânion da Ronda lies in the municipality’s rural area. It is more than 1,000 meters deep and offers panoramic views. There are two viewpoints, as well as a 350-meter-long trail that mostly follows a wooden walkway. Cânion das Laranjeiras offers a different kind of landscape: highland grasslands, deep fissures, tall rock walls and native vegetation define the scenery. From there, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Serra Catarinense; the waterfalls plunge from heights of up to 200 meters.

Cânion das Laranjeiras lies within the designated boundary of Parque Nacional de São Joaquim. The upper area is privately owned; permission is required to enter this area. Check access conditions before visiting. The national park is a protected area featuring highland grasslands and araucaria trees, and is associated with the municipality of Bom Jardim da Serra.

Compare Hikes and Access

Cânion do Funil is also located in the municipality’s rural area. At the main point is a large rock that resembles an upside-down funnel; there are also hiking trails with views of the Serra. Reaching the main viewpoint requires a seven-kilometer hike. Access is via private property along SC-390. Compared with the 350-meter trail at Cânion da Ronda, this is a considerably longer route; at Funil, access across private property is also a separate planning consideration. Check current access conditions in advance.

Waterfalls and Other Natural Attractions

Cascata da Barrinha lies within the municipality, alongside SC-390. It has clear water and an area for relaxing, and is also considered easy to access. It is also described as a swimming spot. As visitor conditions may change, check the latest information before visiting.

In addition to its highland grasslands and araucaria trees, Parque Nacional de São Joaquim is a point of interest for hikers: Trilha dos Xaxins Gigantes is part of the Recanto Santa Bárbara visitor area.

Local History and Finding Accommodation

The history of Cânion da Ronda adds another dimension to this landscape attraction. Tropeiros, who traveled with goods and livestock, used it as a resting place. They kept their animals together there and watched over them so they would not scatter across the fields.

When looking for hotels in Bom Jardim da Serra, it can help to decide on your priorities first: Would you like to include the road landscape of Serra do Rio do Rastro, the canyons, waterfalls or the town center in your trip?
