Pau Dos Ferros can be explored through various cultural perspectives: a collection preserves the heritage of the Sertão, historic buildings and a market offer insights into the city’s history, and a festival puts music and Repente at the center. In addition, two public reservoirs are considered a shared heritage of the residents and are under special municipal protection. When planning, you can choose your own focus from collections, architectural history, music, and landscape conservation.

The Museu de Cultura Sertaneja and the Heritage of the Sertão

The Museu de Cultura Sertaneja on the UERN campus in Pau Dos Ferros preserves the historical and cultural heritage, as well as the memory, of the northeastern Brazilian Sertão. The collection includes more than 200 objects, 87 books, and approximately 780 Cordel booklets. The collection may grow, so these quantities may change. The objects, books, and booklets each offer a different perspective on the holdings; together, they evoke the cultural memory preserved by the museum.

The museum welcomes visitors from civil society, as well as groups from public and private schools, technical education institutions, and higher education institutions. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check in advance whether a visit is possible. Another cultural initiative, PROCULT, is based in Pau Dos Ferros: UERN faculty work together with the Museu de Cultura Sertaneja on it. Its goal is to broaden access to and appreciation of the historical, cultural, economic, and political heritage of the Sertão.

Buildings and City History

The Casa de Cultura Popular Joaquim Correia is a historic and cultural building. The Fundação José Augusto listed it as a protected heritage site in 2006. The Casa houses the “Toinho Dutra” Art Gallery, with two interconnected rooms. Works from the “Olhares Pauferrenses” project are on display there. This brings together a protected building and a specific art project in one place—two distinct starting points for exploring the city’s cultural history.

Another landmark is the Mercado Público Municipal Antônio Soares de Holanda, built in 1868. The dates tell us different things: 1868 is the year the market was built, while 2006 is the year the Casa de Cultura was listed as a protected heritage site. This distinction helps separate a building’s history from its later cultural and historical designation.

Music, Repente, and Cultural Events

FEPREV is a festival of Repentistas and Violeiros held in Pau Dos Ferros. At its second edition on August 14, 2026, it introduced the audience to singing accompanied by the viola, Repente, and northeastern Brazilian popular culture. Those interested in music and oral poetry will find in it a cultural focus different from the museum’s collection or the Casa’s architectural history.

A historical event connection leads to the Terminal Turístico Lindalva Torquato at the Barragem: the 16th edition of Vitrine Cultural was held there in 2021. Musical performances and poetry recitals were livestreamed from the venue. This describes a specific event from that year; it is not an indication of a current events program.

Reservoirs and Landscape Conservation

The municipality’s approach to landscapes and ecosystems is also part of Pau Dos Ferros’ character. The public reservoirs Dr. Pedro Diógenes Fernandes and 25 de Março are considered a shared heritage of the residents. They are under special municipal protection, which serves to preserve ecosystems and ensure rational management. The reservoirs add a distinct focus to the cultural themes: the protection and management of these bodies of water.

The themes are easy to distinguish: the Museu and PROCULT focus on the heritage of the Sertão, the Casa and the market on buildings and city history, and FEPREV on music and Repente. The two reservoirs add the municipal protection of ecosystems to these perspectives. This lets you plan your stay around the themes that interest you most, rather than combining the different aspects into a single experience.
