The dark waters of Lagoa Araraquara and the various hiking trails in Mata Estrela give Baía Formosa two distinct natural highlights. There are also coastal activities and historic sites. When looking for a vacation rental for your stay, you can plan your trip around whether hiking, coastal activities or cultural history is your priority.

Lagoons and Ecological Hikes

Lagoa Araraquara, also known as Lagoa da Coca-Cola, has dark water. Its color is attributed to pigmentation from tree roots and the chemical composition of the soil, which is rich in iodine and iron. In Mata Estrela, ecological hikes follow several different routes. The trails pass by several lagoons, including Gravatá, Chico do Alto, Capitão, Junco and Bumba. For longer ecological hikes, it is possible to walk as far as Sagi. Lagoa Araraquara thus represents the distinctive character of a single lagoon, while the trails in Mata Estrela offer a choice of several routes and lagoons.

Coast and Activities

Praia do Bacupari has a preserved area of Atlantic Rainforest vegetation and also provides access to the open sea. Praia do Porto is characterized by cliffs and dunes, making it suitable for excursions and adventures. The two coastal locations offer different highlights: preserved vegetation and open sea at one, and cliffs and dunes as an excursion landscape at the other.

Activities also differ in their format and schedule. Boat tours include a stop for swimming and diving with dolphins; they are planned around the tides. At the end of the day, you can watch the sunset. Mirante da Baía is a stop on the city tour, where you can also watch the sunset. Buggy tours are offered using authorized vehicles. Surf lessons are available for beginners, intermediate surfers and advanced surfers.

History and Cultural Points of Interest

Baía Formosa began with the construction of a boat harbor, around which a fishing settlement developed. The Nossa Senhora da Conceição church was founded in 1892 and is considered the municipality’s most important architectural monument. Mercado das Artes has nine shops selling a variety of tourist products; orders are also accepted for some items.

Praia do Sagi is a small district with a fishing village and an Indigenous community. It lies on the border with the state of Paraíba. Sagi is also a destination for longer ecological hikes that can extend as far as the district.

A Regional Cultural Context

A broader perspective takes you to the state of Rio Grande do Norte, where the regional Rota das CaveRNas brings together cave and archaeological heritage. The route includes four caves and an archaeological site; all are legally authorized for tourism use. There are also numerous rock art sites in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte.
