Açu combines a variety of travel experiences: hikes in the Floresta Nacional de Açu, the city’s history, and the São João celebrations. Rural river and lagoon experiences can also be found in the municipality of Assú. One distinction is especially important for planning: the festival takes place during a traditional period, while boat trips and canoe regattas depend on water levels and rainfall.

Hiking in the Floresta Nacional de Açu

The Floresta Nacional de Açu is a state conservation area covering 225 hectares within the urban boundaries of Assú. Hiking, including night hikes, is part of the visitor experience on its trails. The protected area thus offers a distinct natural attraction within the city limits. Visitors who like to include a walk or hike in their trip will find a different focus here than in the city’s historical and cultural experiences.

São João: Festival season and city history

The São João celebrations in Assú traditionally take place from June 14 to 24. The program includes nightly novenas, a procession, horseback rides, a quadrilha festival, and concerts. Individual events may vary from year to year, so check that year’s schedule when planning your trip. This lets you plan around the festival without assuming that the same events take place every year.

The Igreja Matriz de São João Batista also offers insight into the town’s history. The original building dates to July 15, 1760; the church was extensively rebuilt between 1850 and 1857. It is located in the urban center of Assú. During the São João celebrations, the Casa do Artesão Assuense offers handmade souvenirs; the selection may vary.

Another cultural experience is the theatrical and cultural event Auto de São João Batista at the Anfiteatro Arcelino Costa Leitão. It portrays the life of the city’s patron saint through theater, music, and dance. Together with the church and the festival program, it offers a glimpse into different forms of local culture. No regular performance schedule is specified, so do not plan your visit around a fixed event date without checking first.

River and lagoon in the municipality

In the municipality of Assú, the stretch of the Rio Piranhas-Açu that passes through Assú is a setting for observing the landscape and taking photographs. The river also offers rural tourism experiences in riverside communities. Boat trips on the Rio Piranhas-Açu are possible when water levels allow. Water conditions are therefore a specific requirement for this experience; check them before planning a boat trip.

Lagoa do Piató is in the rural area of Assú, near the communities around the lagoon. Ecological trails are a visitor experience there; local conditions may vary. Canoe regattas are also a tradition among the surrounding communities. They take place when the lagoon fills with water again after heavy rainfall. Unlike the São João season, these experiences therefore cannot be planned solely around a fixed time on the calendar.

Which experiences shape your plans

If you want to time your trip around culture and city history, the traditional period of the São João celebrations is a useful guide. By contrast, water levels and rainfall determine whether boat trips on the Rio Piranhas-Açu or regattas at Lagoa do Piató can take place. Hikes in the Floresta Nacional de Açu offer another, distinct focus. You can decide which matters most for your stay: festival culture, the protected area, or water-dependent experiences in the municipality’s rural areas.
