Silva Jardim combines nature watching with a rich cultural history. At Parque Ecológico Mico-Leão-Dourado, hiking trails and viewpoints reveal the connection between the golden lion tamarin’s habitat and the protection of the Atlantic Forest. In the municipality, historic buildings, cultural institutions and a living folklore tradition tell further chapters of the area’s history.
Nature and Golden Lion Tamarins
At Parque Ecológico Mico-Leão-Dourado, you can explore hiking trails, viewpoints and opportunities for nature watching. The “Na Trilha do Mico” activity allows visitors to observe golden lion tamarins in the wild and learn about their behavior alongside AMLD researchers. A permanent exhibition complements this nature-focused experience with interactive panels and videos about protecting the species and the Atlantic Forest. Outdoors, the focus is on observation and habitat, while the exhibition explores conservation topics.
On September 20, 2024, Parque Ecológico Mico-Leão-Dourado in Silva Jardim was recognized as a Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural (RPPN). Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas is a 5,052.53-hectare protected area in the Atlantic Forest; the threatened species protected there include the golden lion tamarin. RPPN Parque do Mico covers 151 hectares of Atlantic Forest in the municipality of Silva Jardim.
Cultural History in Buildings and Institutions
Centro Cultural Capivari is housed in a former prison dating from 1841 and is now dedicated to cultural exhibitions. Casarão 1919 – Casa da Zezé Macedo has a different historical connection: the building acquired its current Neoclassical façade in 1919. Igreja Nossa Senhora da Lapa became a parish in 1801, while Estação Ferroviária de Capivari opened in 1886.
Estação de Juturnaíba is thought to have opened in the 1880s; it is one of the municipality’s most significant tangible cultural heritage sites. Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Gaviões is also part of the area’s historical and cultural heritage. It is located in the rural community of Gaviões in Silva Jardim. These sites represent different aspects of local history: religious heritage, railway history and buildings with historic uses.
Culture is also expressed through living institutions. Associação Folclórica Mineiro Pau was founded in 1952, remains active in Silva Jardim and represents a continuing folk tradition. Banda Honório Coelho offers music lessons and a variety of cultural activities. The “Silva Jardim – Turismo a Pé” walking tour visits points of interest where the city’s political, cultural and economic history is presented. It was officially launched in 2019; check whether it is currently available before making plans.
Juturnaíba and the Surrounding Area
Represa de Juturnaíba lies between Silva Jardim and Araruama; approximately 70 percent of the reservoir is within Silva Jardim. Lagoa de Juturnaíba has a water surface area of about 43 km² and an average depth of 6 meters. In the municipality of the same name, it offers opportunities for water and nautical sports. Cais de Pescadores de Juturnaíba is a departure point for fishermen and boats traveling to other fishing communities along the lagoon.
Nearby, Aldeia Velha lies at the foot of the Serra do Mar, within APA São João/Mico Leão Dourado. Horseback rides there follow rivers and forest trails; they are suitable for the whole family, require no prior experience and last two hours or more. A 1.5-kilometer easy-to-moderate trail leads to Cachoeira das Sete Quedas within Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural Serra Grande. The route takes approximately 3.5 hours. Check booking requirements and conditions before your trip. Cachoeira das Andorinhas in Aldeia Velha features a 19-meter-high waterfall where rappelling is possible.
A Local Specialty
The cuisine is also part of the region’s character: palmito de pupunha (peach palm heart) is considered a specialty of the local food scene. Together, its nature and cultural offerings give you several ways to plan a trip to Silva Jardim. Decide which aspects you would like to shape your stay, and choose accommodation to suit your plans.
