Resende brings together places of remembrance, railway history, art and urban green spaces. When planning your trip, it’s worth first deciding what you’re most interested in: cultural history and outdoor activities offer different experiences. You can also tailor your hotel search to your interests without limiting your stay to a single attraction.

Places of remembrance and architectural history

At Praça do Expedicionário stands the Casa do Expedicionário, with a monument honoring the fighters of the Second World War. The items on display include maps, books and postcards, as well as medals and certificates. There is also a hygiene kit used by soldiers and a survival kit. Here, public remembrance is brought together with objects from the everyday lives of soldiers.

In Resende’s historic center, 63 properties are protected by municipal heritage designation; this number may change when the municipal list is revised. The former Paço Municipal was built between 1834 and 1856 and is now the Casa da Cultura. The building is used exclusively for cultural purposes and houses a historical archive, a music school and the Museu da Imagem e do Som.

Resende railway station houses a permanent exhibition on the spread of the railway in the Agulhas Negras region. Ponte Nilo Peçanha, also known as Ponte Velha, was inaugurated in April 1905 and built using a prefabricated metal structure imported from Belgium. The two places offer different perspectives: the exhibition focuses on regional railway history, while the bridge highlights its construction and origins.

Art and urban green spaces

The Museu de Arte Moderna de Resende adds an artistic perspective. Its collection includes works by Tarsila do Amaral, Guignard, Segall, Ceschiatti, Carlos Scliar, Göeldi, Imberê Camargo, Alex Gama, Clécio Penedo and Santa Rosa. The specific works on display may vary due to changes in presentation or conservation.

A recreational complex in the heart of the city has a walking path, an outdoor gym, an area for roller skating and slacklining, a skateboard ramp, a sand court and a lake with ornamental fish. The facilities may change; if you want to use a specific facility, check its current status in advance. Flying sports, including panoramic flights, are also among the activities highlighted in Resende.

Nature in the wider Resende destination

In the wider Resende destination, Parque Nacional do Itatiaia offers a broader perspective on nature. The park protects important headwater areas and rich biodiversity. It covers parts of the municipalities of Itatiaia and Resende in the state of Rio de Janeiro, as well as Bocaina de Minas and Itamonte in Minas Gerais. Circuito Cinco Lagos is an approximately 11 km hike that was officially opened by Parque Nacional do Itatiaia in 2015 and passes through areas of Resende and Itamonte. Plan it as a hike in its own right, and check trail conditions and access rules in advance, as these may change.
