There are two main ways to explore Nhangapi: the history of the former railway station and hikes with different starting points. The town’s history comes to life through specific names, dates, and spatial relationships; the trails differ mainly in where they begin and where they lead. You can first decide whether to focus on historical landmarks, a circular hike starting in Nhangapi, or a route from Mirante do Último Adeus into town.

Railway History and Chapel

A municipal directory published in 2025 lists Nhangapi under the road name Rodovia Presidente Dutra. The former Itatiaia railway station in Nhangapi is central to the area’s railway history. It opened on January 2, 1874, at kilometer 211.108. The date and kilometer marker place the station at a specific point in the historical railway record; the road name, meanwhile, provides a separate reference for locating the town.

In February 2008, all that remained of the former station was a platform overgrown with vegetation. Capela de São Benedito was inaugurated in 1932, opposite Itatiaia station in Nhangapi. These historical details have different points of reference: the 1874 opening concerns the station, the 1932 inauguration concerns the chapel, and the observation about the platform refers to February 2008.

The chapel’s location opposite the station establishes a spatial relationship between them, while the kilometer marker places the station along the railway line. Together, these offer two ways to orient yourself historically: the relationship between the named locations and a precise railway kilometer marker.

Compare Hikes by Starting Point and Destination

A circular hike starts in Nhangapi and passes Lago Azul and Cachoeira Itupi. The route description therefore gives both the starting point in town and two waypoints. If you specifically want to plan a loop that starts in Nhangapi, this is the route description to follow.

Another hiking route runs from Mirante do Último Adeus to Nhangapi and also passes Lago Azul. Unlike the circular hike, Nhangapi is the destination rather than the starting point here. Lago Azul is mentioned on both routes, making their different directions a clear point of comparison. To plan your trip, first decide whether you want to start a loop in town or take the route from the Mirante to Nhangapi.

The circular hike was recorded in November 2024; the route from the Mirante was recorded in June 2024. Trail conditions may change. Check the current route before setting out.

Understanding Nhangapi as a Destination

For those interested in local history, the former station and the chapel are the named landmarks. When planning a hike, comparing the starting point and destination can help you fit the routes into your travel plans. These offer two different ways to experience Nhangapi: historical landmarks with specific dates, or hikes described by their starting point, destination, and named waypoints.
