Paraty brings together a historic center, museums, religious heritage and a distinctive culinary tradition. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: urban history, cultural programs or the city’s cuisine. The following places and themes show what to expect in Paraty without turning them into a set itinerary.

Historic Center, Churches and Museums

Paraty’s Historic Center is one of the six components of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Paraty and Ilha Grande – Culture and Biodiversity.” Its 18th-century urban layout and much of its colonial architecture from the 18th and early 19th centuries have been preserved. Those interested in urban history can consider both together by looking at the street pattern and the buildings: the layout and the building fabric tell different aspects of the same historic place.

The Chafariz do Pedreira is a useful landmark at the entrance to the Historic Center: it stands in Praça do Chafariz and was built in marble in 1851. You can explore the center on foot along a circular route that takes in major sights. Check in advance whether a guided tour is available on your dates.

The Museu de Arte Sacra de Paraty is housed in the Church of Santa Rita, which was consecrated in 1722. During the Feast of Saint Rita, the museum once again serves as a church, and much of the collection is used by the community during festivals and processions. This creates a special connection between the museum’s function and lived religious practice. Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Santa Rita, along with their religious brotherhood practices, are also part of the city’s tangible and intangible heritage, which MAS-Paraty researches, preserves and interprets.

Another perspective on the city’s architectural history can be found at Casa da Cultura de Paraty, housed in a mansion dating from 1754. It offers guided tours, workshops and regular courses on cultural heritage, visual arts and music education. The Visitas Mediadas program introduces students, residents and visitors to visual art, music, and Paraty’s cultural and natural heritage through exhibitions and events. Check current program details before your trip; group arrangements should also be confirmed in advance.

The Museu Forte Defensor Perpétuo focuses on interpreting and researching the history and memory of Paraty and the region. Forte Defensor Perpétuo is recognized as cultural heritage of Paraty and Brazil and serves as a center of memory for traditional cultures and history. Together with the churches and cultural programs, it offers several ways to explore the area: through historic buildings, collections and engagement with regional memory. The Igreja Nossa Senhora das Dores adds to the architectural history: it was built in 1800 on Rua Fresca by women of Paraty’s aristocracy.

Culinary Traditions and Cultural Insights

Paraty joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as a City of Gastronomy on October 31, 2017. Traditional cuisine includes farofa de feijão, which is still served at the Festa do Divino’s traditional lunch. Cachaça is also part of the culinary tradition: during the city’s economic boom in the 19th century, it had more than 150 distilleries. These connections offer different perspectives on the cuisine, from a specific festival meal to a historic industry.

The Folia Gastronômica festival showcased traditional and innovative local cuisine through talks, tastings and training sessions, and was held for 15 years. The city’s culinary profile therefore goes beyond individual dishes and also includes events where knowledge and flavor came together.

For another landmark outside the Historic Center, the entrance to the Caminho do Ouro is in the Penha neighborhood, opposite the Igreja da Penha. Check local access rules before your trip. Whether your focus is preserved architecture, religious heritage, cultural programs or gastronomy, you can explore Paraty through these different themes without having to combine them into a single route.
