At an altitude of 1,070 metres, Camapuã Waterfall lies in the lower section of Parque Nacional do Itatiaia. When planning a trip, Itatiaia offers two distinct areas of focus: birdwatching in nature, and church history and cultural life in the municipality.

Birdwatching and a Waterfall in the National Park

Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is one of the five best places in Brazil for birdwatching. This makes nature a specific focus in the municipality. For anyone interested in birds, it offers a clear reason to consider Itatiaia as a travel destination.

Camapuã Waterfall is also located in the national park, in its lower section. It opened with adapted infrastructure: handrails run along the entire route, and a ramp leads to the water and is intended for wheelchair users. Check the condition of the infrastructure before visiting.

The Centro de Visitantes of Parque Nacional do Itatiaia is located in the municipality. Visitors can explore interpretive, hiking and interactive exhibits, a mountaineering exhibition, a model room and an auditorium. Thus, alongside birdwatching, the trip’s nature focus also includes exhibitions.

Church History and the Feast of Saint Joseph

The original chapel of Igreja Matriz de São José dates back to 1839. The present-day church developed from it and is dedicated to São José, the patron saint of the municipality of Itatiaia. The chapel and church therefore connect a specific historical starting point with the religious significance of the patron saint.

The Feast of Saint Joseph is celebrated on March 19. It includes religious, cultural and musical events and is one of the most traditional celebrations on the municipal calendar. The traditional procession ends at Praça Mariana Rocha Leão in central Itatiaia. The fixed date offers a clear reference point for cultural planning; the combination of religious and cultural events sets the feast apart from a visit focused primarily on nature observation.

Cultural Sites in the Centre

Casa da Cultura is located in central Itatiaia. It offered free one-hour classes on weekdays, including guitar, keyboard, singing, fanfare, choir, sewing and patchwork. The course offerings may change. The subjects listed range from music to crafts and offer insight into the breadth of the programme at the time.

Teatro Municipal Oswaldo Motta has 250 seats. Also located in the town centre is Biblioteca Pública de Itatiaia Dona Mariúcha, or BIPUIM for short, with a collection of 20,000 books. The library welcomes students from the municipal school system for storytelling and theatre activities; this offering is intended for this group.

Choose Nature or Culture as Your Focus

For your travel plans, birdwatching, the waterfall and the visitor centre fit the nature theme, while the church, the feast and the facilities in the centre offer cultural points of interest. If you plan your trip around March 19, check the specific event dates before booking. Before visiting the waterfall, you should also check the condition of the infrastructure described above.
