Two French-style lakes and a pavilion define the Parque Natural Municipal Centenário de Barra Mansa, also known as Jardim das Preguiças. The second name refers to the sloths found there. People come to the park for walks, running and other physical activities. The park’s design and opportunities for exercise are as much a focus as its wildlife.

Nature between the park and the protected area

Floresta da Cicuta offers a different perspective: this ecological area is dedicated to protecting wildlife, water sources and vegetation, as well as to study and recreation. Eighty-five percent of the ARIE Floresta da Cicuta conservation unit lies within Barra Mansa. Together, the park and protected area showcase two distinct aspects of nature: an urban park with lakes and a connection to sloths, and an ecological area whose purposes include protection and study.

Cultural heritage and cultural use

Palácio Barão de Guapy is listed among the cultural heritage sites protected by INEPAC. The palace houses the Biblioteca Municipal Professora Adelaide Franco. The protected building and the library bring cultural heritage together with a contemporary cultural use.

Another historic site is the fully restored colonial manor house Fazenda da Posse, which serves as a cultural center. Its initial construction in Barra Mansa is dated to 1764. The Centro de Documentação e Memória Fazenda da Posse is also part of the area’s cultural memory: it preserves old newspapers, rare photographs and archaeological objects. Alongside the historic buildings, written, visual and material records are also in focus.

The railway station hall at Estação Ferroviária de Barra Mansa is also part of a historic complex: the station opened in the 19th century. Today, the hall serves as a cultural venue and is also used by the Abadá Capoeira group. Galeria Clécio Penedo offers a different focus. It opened on October 22, 2021, and hosts exhibitions by artists from Barra Mansa and the region. While the station and manor house combine historic architecture with cultural use, the gallery highlights art from the local and regional area. The Rota da Fé connects Barra Mansa and Quatis through religious tourism, culture and appreciation of the historic heritage of both municipalities.

Festivals and dates

The festival in honor of Saint Sebastian is a traditional religious and cultural feature of the city’s calendar. It includes Masses, processions through the city center, regional shows, food stalls and activities for children. Details may vary from one edition to another; if you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
