Salgueiro brings together local crafts and visual arts with a neo-Gothic cathedral, historic houses and a park with a mini zoo, library and lake. It is also an important road transport hub in the state of Pernambuco. This offers different ways to plan your trip, focusing on culture, architecture, the park or Salgueiro’s role as a transport hub.

Crafts and Historic Houses

Casa da Cultura de Salgueiro is a place to exhibit and sell local handicrafts made from papier-mâché, straw, clay, caroá fibers and banana fibers, as well as visual art by local artists. Crafts and visual art offer two different ways to explore the cultural scene: one draws attention to the materials used, while the other focuses on the work of local artists. You can also plan your stay around whichever of these themes interests you most.

Casa da Cultura is now housed in a two-story historic townhouse at Rua Major Raimundo de Sá 95, in the Santo Antônio neighborhood. Casario da Praça da Matriz presents a different architectural form: it consists of single-story houses built side by side. Some of its features show architectural characteristics from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The comparison highlights the difference between a single two-story townhouse and a row of one-story houses; the period characteristics apply to some features of the Casario.

The Cathedral and the City’s Recorded History

Catedral de Santo Antônio offers a different architectural accent. Its neo-Gothic design includes a central tower with a pyramidal dome, pinnacles, an oculus and stained-glass windows depicting angels and saints. An oculus is a round window; pinnacles are slender, tapering architectural elements. These details complement the overall impression of the central tower and make the design more specific than simply describing it as neo-Gothic.

According to tradition, the cathedral’s founding began at the same time as the city’s. After Raimundo de Sá was found in 1835, construction began on a chapel, which was completed around 1838. The account thus links a traditional story of its founding with a specific sequence of events: the discovery and start of construction were followed by the chapel’s completion.

The Park and Cultural Insights

Parque da Criança offers a different combination of themes from the cultural and architectural sites. It has a mini zoo with some animals typical of the Caatinga, a library, a landscaped setting and a lake. This brings together wildlife and reading alongside the park’s greenery and water. For trip planning, the park is a distinct focus, separate from crafts and architectural history.

A dated glimpse of cultural life was the official opening of Ciclo Junino 2026 on June 5. Several cultural groups took part in a procession through the streets and avenues in central Salgueiro. It was led by the trio elétrico Cygnus, directed by local artists. The event is thus tied to a specific day and a procession in the city center.

Transport Links and Choosing Accommodation

If you are looking for hotels in Salgueiro, first consider the main reason for your stay: culture and architectural history, or the town’s transport links.
