Rio Formoso combines 17th-century churches with the municipality’s landscape: the estuary, mangroves and remnants of Mata Atlântica forest offer another, nature-focused perspective on the destination. The churches are associated with the town, while the protected areas extend across several municipalities. This geographical distinction helps you place historical sites and natural areas in the right context.

Churches and History in the Town

The Igreja de São José was built in the 17th century and is considered the main church of the city of Rio Formoso. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos also dates from this period; it was built in the mid-17th century. Together, the two churches provide a specific timeframe for the history of the area. São José is also identified as the main church.

The Estuary and Protected Areas of the Municipality

The municipality of Rio Formoso lies entirely within the Mata Atlântica biome and includes 583 hectares of mangroves. The municipality’s estuary complex includes remnants of Mata Atlântica forest and mangrove forests. The estuary is considered extensive and well preserved, with diverse fauna.

The APA Estuarina do Rio Formoso covers 2,724 hectares and lies within the municipalities of Sirinhaém, Rio Formoso and Tamandaré. This area refers to the protected area as a whole, not solely to the town limits. The combination of estuary, mangroves and forest remnants can therefore be understood as the landscape of the municipality and a wider area.

Another large-scale protected area is the APA de Guadalupe. It was established on March 13, 1997, by State Decree No. 19.635. The protected area covers 32,135 hectares of land and 12,664 hectares of sea and extends across parts of the municipalities of Sirinhaém, Rio Formoso, Tamandaré and Barreiros.

Historical Sites and Cultural Connections

Within the municipality of Rio Formoso, Morro do Reduto lies inside the APA de Guadalupe. Morro do Reduto is a historical site: the Batalha do Reduto took place there in 1633, during the Dutch occupation of Pernambuco. Nature and history come together here within the same municipality, without implying that the site lies within the town itself.

The Museu Quilombola opened to the public on October 14, 2014. Visitor groups included school classes, universities and people from the community. The Dia da Batalha do Reduto is listed as intangible cultural heritage in the official event calendar of the state of Pernambuco; the commemorative day falls on February 7 each year. If your trip coincides with this time, check the program for that year.

Arts and crafts and mangrove cuisine are also among the municipality’s cultural themes. In 2023, Instituto Negralinda trained 50 marisqueiras and artisans in courses and workshops on arts and crafts, mangrove cuisine and community-based tourism. Sebrae PE and the local city administration supported the training.

Exploring Rivers and Mangroves

The Rota dos Manguezais de Rio Formoso is described as a boat trip through the municipality’s rivers and mangroves, led by local guides, fishers and professional boat operators. Experiences described as part of the route include gathering shellfish, sururu and aratu alongside marisqueiras. Alongside the historical sites, the river landscape and this specific gathering experience offer different themes to explore.

If you are especially interested in nature, information about Mata Atlântica, mangroves and the two protected areas offers different scales for understanding the landscape. Those who prioritize culture will find specific historical references instead: the 17th-century churches, the 1633 battle at Morro do Reduto and the annual commemorative day. This makes it possible to choose Rio Formoso based on the interests that matter to your trip planning.
