Ilha Do Mel lies at the entrance to Paranaguá Bay. The landscape differs between the south and the north: the smaller southern part is characterized by hills and beaches facing the open sea. The larger northern part features Restinga plains, mangroves, streams and lagoons; its beaches face the inner part of the bay. This means you can encounter different coastal and habitat types on a single island.
Landscape and Protected Areas
About 93 percent of Ilha Do Mel is protected by conservation areas. Around 81 percent of the surface area forms an Ecological Station; about 12 percent is occupied by Parque Estadual da Ilha do Mel. It was established by Decree 5.506 on March 21, 2002. The visitor rules for the two protected areas differ: public visits to the Ecological Station are permitted only with authorization from IAT and for educational purposes. Parque Estadual allows public visits, environmental education, consciously and responsibly conducted recreational activities, and scientific research.
Parque Estadual protects beach areas and rocky coasts, as well as significant remnants of dense montane and lowland ombrophilous forest and Restinga forest. Mangroves and Restinga habitats are important for nature conservation. Plants found on the island include orchids and bromeliads. Those interested in nature and landscapes will find plenty to explore here—from the different coastal formations to the habitats in the island’s interior.
Getting to the Island and Trails
Ilha Do Mel can be reached by boat from Pontal do Sul or Paranaguá. The crossing from Pontal do Sul takes about 30 minutes; the duration can vary depending on navigation conditions. On the island, travel is permitted only on foot or by bicycle. This rule is worth bearing in mind when planning, since getting around the island depends directly on walking or cycling.
The trails range from 650 meters to more than five kilometers in length. You can explore them independently using the available signs or go with guides. For a specific route to Farol das Conchas, the trail first follows a path and then climbs a staircase with 150 steps. Conditions on site can vary, so take this into account when planning. The lighthouse was built in 1872 on Morro das Conchas to assist navigation at the entrance to the Barre and access to Paranaguá Bay.
Lighthouse, Fortress and Cultural Connections
Fortaleza Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres also tells part of the island’s history. It was built on Ilha Do Mel in 1769 and stands on a slope of Morro da Baleia. The lighthouse and fortress relate to different historical themes: Farol das Conchas is associated with navigation and access to the bay, while the Fortaleza is a structure dating from 1769. Their names can therefore be understood in the context of the island’s maritime and architectural history, without conflating their respective locations and functions.
The state’s designation of Ilha Do Mel for protection in 1975 aimed to preserve its landscape, flora and fauna, archaeological sites, and cultural connections. Traditional practices associated with the island include artisanal fishing, local storytelling, Fandango, Barreado, and historic ways of interacting with the area. These connections relate to former residents and the historical relationship with the area. For travelers, they offer another perspective on the island alongside its landscapes and buildings.
In the wider surrounding region, in the waters of Paranaguá Bay, Guiana dolphins can be observed; they feed mainly on fish. This wildlife-watching opportunity is in the bay and not in any specific part of Ilha Do Mel.
