General Carneiro combines natural attractions with church architecture, military history and regional cuisine. Highlights include a route along the Rio Jangada, churches with Ukrainian connections, and dishes that represent Ukrainian or gaúcho-influenced cuisine. When planning your trip, you can explore nature, architecture and local traditions as distinct themes.

Nature and landscape

Lago Kuriukaka is one of General Carneiro’s main recreational areas. A 3 km route runs along the Rio Jangada and is suitable for walking or cycling. You can choose between a lake and a riverside route as two different ways to enjoy the natural surroundings.

The area’s natural attractions also include two municipal nature parks. Parque Municipal Natural Duzeolina Dissenha was established on December 17, 2014, by Decree No. 191/2014. It covers 241.970 hectares, is located in Colonia Mendes and belongs to Fazenda São Zacharias. Parque Municipal Natural João Dissenha was established on the same day by Decree No. 192/2014. It covers 313.489 hectares and belongs to Fazenda Santa Cruz Área Oeste.

Sítio Pouso Bonito is one of the places in the countryside around General Carneiro where visitors can relax in nature. Parque Ambiental Municipal is also mentioned as a place for recreation and contact with nature. These sites add to the area’s natural attractions alongside Lago Kuriukaka and the route along the Rio Jangada.

Churches and history

Igreja Ucraniana São Miguel Arcanjo has four large domes. It also features four icons painted by a religious artist who trained in Ukraine. The architecture and icon painting offer two distinct cultural points of interest for visitors to the church. Visits must be arranged in advance.

Igreja do Divino Espírito Santo was built from hand-sawn wood. It is over a hundred years old and retains its original architectural features. Inside, there is an extensive collection related to the Ukrainian Byzantine rite. Visits to this church must also be arranged in advance.

Monumento Cruz do Aviador stands in Marco Cinco. It was erected to mark the first fatal accident involving a Brazilian Army aviator during a military operation in General Carneiro. The memorial connects local history with Brazil’s military history.

Regional cuisine and tradition

Perohê and churrasco are considered typical dishes of cuisine strongly influenced by Ukrainian or gaúcho traditions. Both cultural influences are therefore reflected in General Carneiro’s culinary traditions.

The Festa do Carneiro Desossado e Recheado has been held in General Carneiro since 2002. If you are planning your trip around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

At the municipal level, Rancho do Tio Cróve is also part of General Carneiro’s cultural history. It is a Centro de Tradições Tropeiras, founded in 2002 by Sebastião Clóvis Ferraz de Oliveira, known as “Tio Cróve,” and his wife, Maria Arceli Godinho de Oliveira. A report dated August 21, 2022, described photographs, documents, household objects and other items relating to the history and culture of the municipality and its people.
