Sapucaí-Mirim brings together a challenging mountain route, waterfalls, ceramics and religious tradition. The town lies in the valley of the Sapucaí-Mirim River; nature, crafts and local history give this destination a distinctive character.

Mountain Scenery and Nature

Pedra do Campestre is located in the Bairro Paiolzinho, 16 km from the town center, and stands 2,060 m high. From the summit, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over the Vale do Paraíba and the mountain ranges in the south of Minas Gerais. The route to Pedra do Campestre is rated difficult, is 9.5 km long and takes an average of six hours. The 16 km refers to the distance from Pedra do Campestre to the town center; 9.5 km and six hours refer to the route. Its duration makes it a separate, time-intensive activity. Ecomanti Turismo is listed as a CADASTUR-accredited provider for guided activities at Pedra do Campestre; check availability in advance.

Cachoeira da Amizade is 2 km from the center. It consists of two waterfalls, each about 20 m high, which form a crystal-clear pool. The area around Cachoeira has diverse fauna and flora; about 80 percent of the original vegetation remains intact.

Stage 3 of the Rota Verde also starts in Sapucaí-Mirim and passes through one of the largest environmental protection areas in the Serra da Mantiqueira.

Local History, Art and Pilgrimage Tradition

The early settlement had a Matriz built in honor of its patron saint, Sant’Ana, and the Sapucaí-Mirim River. Igreja Matriz Sant’Ana was founded in 1871; its chapel was built between 1918 and 1937. Escadão de Mosaico is an urban art and cultural attraction in Sapucaí-Mirim.

Marco do Peregrino honors pilgrims traveling along the Caminho da Fé and Caminho da Divina Providência routes that pass through Sapucaí-Mirim. Mirante do Cruzeiro serves as a place of prayer and celebrations. On the Corpus Christi holiday, it becomes a pilgrimage destination; a traditional walk draws worshippers and tourists. Dates and arrangements may vary; check the details before your trip.

Get Hands-On with Ceramics

At Rudah Art Studio – Ateliê de Cerâmica, visitors can work with clay on a potter’s wheel and make their own bowls, mugs, cups, plates or jugs. The studio also offers the oriental Raku firing technique: glazed ceramic pieces are fired intensely at 1,000 °C and then undergo reduction, producing iridescent colors. Before you arrive, confirm the date and availability of the activity you want. The potter’s wheel is used to shape your own vessels; with Raku, the firing and subsequent reduction create the iridescent colors.
