Sabará’s historic center brings together several layers of history. It is home to 18th-century churches and old fountains; preserved sections of Rua Pedro II, formerly Rua Direita, are lined with mansions, most of which date from the 19th century. The street’s architectural ensemble is protected by the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN). When choosing a hotel, it may help to decide what to focus on first: architectural history and celebrations, or nature trails and walks as well?

Churches, Architecture and City History

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was inaugurated in 1710 and has three naves. This layout divides the church interior into three longitudinal sections. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Ó dates back to 1717 and is considered one of the finest expressions of Baroque architecture in Minas Gerais. The Igreja de São Francisco is a stone religious building; its origins are dated to 1781, as well as more broadly to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Taken together, these dates reflect different kinds of dating: a specifically stated year of inauguration, a year of construction, and a broader date range.

Another testament to the city’s history is the Chafariz do Kaquende, which has supplied Sabará with water since 1757. Fountains and streetscapes offer other perspectives on the historic heritage, complementing the religious buildings. The Casa da Ópera – Teatro Municipal is also part of this heritage: it is considered the second-oldest theater in Brazil.

The Museu do Ouro and Its Collection

The Museu do Ouro is housed in the former Casa de Intendência e Fundição do Ouro of Vila Real de Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Sabará. Its collection comprises 749 objects, including furniture, religious depictions and mining-related items from the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum is currently temporarily closed for restoration work. Plan a visit only once reopening has been confirmed, and check its current status before your trip.

Traditions and Celebrations

The Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is an intangible cultural heritage of Sabará and one of the city’s longest-standing events. The festival’s traditions include rosary prayers, Masses and bell ringing, as well as a procession and the carrying of the image of Nossa Senhora do Rosário. Corpus Christi is another traditional celebration, featuring the creation of colorful sawdust carpets. The celebrations have different stated focal points: prayers and a procession for one, carpets for the other. If you’d like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Trails and Green Spaces

The Parque Natural Municipal Chácara do Lessa combines nature with traces of mining: the park contains ruins and mining remains from the 18th and 19th centuries. It also offers interpretive trails and short walks. From its lookout point, panoramic views extend across the region. This means historical remains, trails and a viewpoint provide different ways to explore the same park.

The Bosque Municipal Alfredo Machado is located in Sabará’s historic center. Its features include a cascade, short trails, a rest area and a walking path. Compared with Chácara do Lessa, the cascade and rest area are highlights here, while the nature park stands out for its mining remains and regional panoramic views.

You can plan a visit to Sabará around specific interests: historic buildings and fountains, traditional celebrations, or short walks in green spaces. If you’re looking for a hotel, first decide which of these themes matters most for your stay. Also consider whether you’d like to travel for a celebration or visit the Museu do Ouro, whose current temporary closure is important to keep in mind when planning.
