Two themes shape the way Paraopeba is seen: the Cerrado landscape of the Floresta Nacional and the town’s history, with its chapels, handicrafts, and religious festivals. If you are considering whether Paraopeba matches your travel interests, you can look at its natural and cultural highlights separately. The Floresta provides a specific point of reference for nature; buildings, handicrafts, and festival traditions tell other stories about the town.

Nature and the Cerrado

The Floresta Nacional de Paraopeba, a state-run national forest, is located in the municipality of Paraopeba in the state of Minas Gerais and belongs to the Cerrado biome. It covers 200 hectares. Its vegetation combines typical Cerrado woodland with experimental pine and eucalyptus plantations. When weighing up your travel interests, you can compare this connection to nature with the town’s historical themes.

Chapels, architectural history, and handicrafts

Largo da Matriz is the historic center of Paraopeba, which grew around the Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, built in the 18th century. The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição is a different building: it is considered Paraopeba’s oldest religious structure and dates from the late 19th century. The chapel’s history includes a ceiling painting from 1915, created by Francisco Figueiredo with the support of his son, José Figueiredo. The construction period and the year the painting was created mark different historical moments.

Another architectural example is the restored colonial house of Baron Antônio Cândido Mascarenhas, with its glazed windows. Alongside the religious buildings, it offers a different perspective on the town’s history.

Handicrafts are also part of Paraopeba’s cultural history. The Centro de Atividades Artesanais Zelina Cândido was inaugurated on June 1, 2002, to preserve and develop the town’s folk arts. It served local artisans as a workplace and as a sales outlet for the ceramics, textiles, floral arrangements, and paintings made there. For those interested in culture, the center offers a different focus from the chapels and colonial house: here, the emphasis is on making and selling goods, as well as on specific types of handicrafts.

Religious festivals and places around town

The Nossa Senhora do Rosário celebration offers another seasonal cultural connection. In Paraopeba, it takes place in August; the Quilombo community’s part of the celebration is held in September. Congado groups from other cities, along with worshippers and visitors, take part. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, please check the specific dates in advance.

Praça Expedicionário Fernandes is home to the Fonte Luminosa de Paraopeba, which served as a backdrop for many events organized by the town’s young people. The concrete bandstand is located between Praça Coronel Caetano Mascarenhas and Praça Manoel Antônio da Silva, near the town hall. During religious festivals, it was used for performances by bands and other artistic events.
