Paraisópolis brings together public art, railway history, and places along the Caminho da Fé. For trip planning, it is worth considering these topics separately at first: historic buildings tell the story of different chapters in the town’s history, while the viewpoint and chapel have their own connection to the Caminho da Fé. That way, you can choose what to focus on depending on whether culture, architectural history, or landscape is your priority.
Art and Local History
The Escultura de Amilcar de Castro, an iron sculpture more than two meters high and just as wide, stands in Praça Coronel José Vieira. The tree-lined square also has an illuminated fountain with synchronized water jets. The large-scale artwork and moving water create different focal points in the same square: the sculpture on one side, and the light and fountain as part of the square’s scene on the other.
Another trace of the town’s history leads to a former Art Deco railway station. The Centro Educacional e Cultural Amílcar de Castro is located there. The building was constructed in 1914 as a station for the Rede Mineira de Viação. In 1987, the station was converted into a cultural center and named after the neoconcrete artist Amilcar de Castro, who was born in Paraisópolis. Architecture, the former railway station, and a local artist’s life story come together here.
The Museu Carlos Gonzaga opened in November 2025. Its collection includes personal belongings, records, trophies, and documents from Carlos Gonzaga’s career. While the former railway station primarily conveys architectural and railway history, the museum’s exhibits offer insight into the career of the person it is named after.
Caminho da Fé and Landscape
Mirante do Imbiruçu is located along the Caminho da Fé in Bairro de Áreas and offers panoramic views. Capela de Santa Ágata e São Peregrino is also connected with the route: it was inaugurated in February 2026 at a viewpoint along the Caminho da Fé in rural Paraisópolis. Mirante do Imbiruçu is described as being along the route; the chapel, as being at the viewpoint where its inauguration took place. Both details give the Caminho da Fé a specific connection to the local landscape.
Near Paraisópolis, Cachoeira dos Henriques lies on the border between Paraisópolis and Gonçalves in southern Minas Gerais. Its location on the municipal boundary places it in the surrounding area and distinguishes it from the attractions within the town.
Railway History, Events, and Music
Ponte de Ferro, over the Rio Sapucaí-Mirim, was built in the early 20th century. It connected the municipalities of Paraisópolis and Itajubá by rail; the route passed through Brasópolis. The bridge is in Bairro Ponte de Ferro, on the highway between Paraisópolis and Conceição dos Ouros. Together with the former railway station, it offers another perspective on railway history: the station represents a specific railway site, while the bridge represents a connection between municipalities.
Feira Raízes da Mantiqueira brings together local artisans, agricultural producers, entrepreneurs, and artists, celebrating the identity, flavors, and talents of Paraisópolis. It is a monthly event; dates are announced in advance. If you would like to plan your trip around the fair, check the announced event dates.
Music is also part of the town’s cultural offerings. Orquestra de Viola Violeiros do Paraíso organizes performances, gatherings, and cultural activities. Its repertoire features classics of música caipira and honors major composers and performers in the genre. Those interested in this style of music will find a different cultural focus here than at the art in the square or the history of the railway station and bridge.
