Montes Claros brings together protected nature, archaeological traces, urban history, and regional products. When choosing a destination or hotel, one simple question can help: would you like your stay to focus more on landscapes and trails, historical and architectural themes, or markets? These different focal points provide clear guidance as you plan your trip.
Nature and Archaeological Traces
Parque Estadual da Lapa Grande is a fully protected nature reserve in the municipality of Montes Claros, covering about 7,000 hectares. Its features include caves and archaeological sites with rock paintings. You can also explore ecological walking trails there. This nature-focused destination brings together landscapes, archaeological traces, and a specific activity.
Parque Florestal da Sapucaia “Simeão Ribeiro” offers a distinct natural setting, with preserved fauna and flora as well as especially scenic rock outcrops. The parks therefore differ in their stated highlights. Lapa Grande combines a protected landscape with caves and archaeological sites; Sapucaia is known for its animal and plant life and rock outcrops.
As part of a renovation of Parque da Sapucaia, the Trilha do Entorno and Trilha da Ponte Queimada trails were opened; a municipal announcement dated May 19, 2025, reported on this. If you plan to visit one of these trails, please check access conditions in advance.
Museum and Architectural History
The Museu Regional do Norte de Minas organizes its permanent exhibitions around four themes: the natural features of northern Minas Gerais; the area's settlement in prehistoric and historical times; the development of Montes Claros; and knowledge, practices, and celebrations. Rare objects illustrate the region's history. Together, the themes lead from the natural environment through settlement and urban development to cultural practices, offering a broad perspective on northern Minas Gerais.
The churches offer distinct historical and architectural perspectives. Igreja Matriz represents the historical origins of Montes Claros, when the settlement was still called Arraial de Formigas. Igreja dos Morrinhos was inaugurated in 1886. The neogothic appearance of Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora Aparecida features pronounced vertical lines, a rose window, stained-glass windows, and needle-shaped finials. Local history, a specific date, and architectural forms thus provide different ways to explore cultural history.
Feirinha and Regional Products
Feirinha de Artesanato takes place on Sundays at Praça da Matriz. Its offerings include religious items, handicrafts, jewelry, decorative items, visual art, and typical dishes. Since schedules and vendors may change, please check the current date and offerings before visiting.
Mercado Municipal offers regional products such as cachaça, requeijão, carne de sol, homemade sweets, and pequi. Unlike Feirinha, which includes art and handicrafts as well as food, this market focuses on specific regional products. If you are interested in the region's cuisine and products, this is a distinct focus when choosing places to visit.
Tailor Your Stay to Your Interests
Lapa Grande and Sapucaia offer different natural highlights; the museum and churches introduce regional history and architecture, while Feirinha and Mercado Municipal offer different insights into handicrafts and products. You can therefore choose accommodation based on the experiences that interest you most in Montes Claros.
